The Gulls were runners up in this competition back in 1989. Last season they had a bye into Round Two, when they lost on Penalties after a 2-2 draw at home to Yeovil
So Stewie - pandering to your impatience - how do you propose that will be funded? If it's a draw at full time it goes to penalties.
It is a old English saying PL, " You must learn to walk before you can run " I am gutted I can't go tonight as I have other commitments. It would have been fun to stand between two of my friends who are Pompey and Torquay supporters, as I of course would have been 50/50
I'm just finding the level of impatience around the team quite extraordinary. This is a new team, some of them haven't even had a start yet. Ricky Holmes made his first start on Saturday. History and gates don't automatically equate to winning games. Saturday's game had far too many 'ifs' - if the 2 definite penalties had been given? If David Connolly hadn't been deliberately wound up by Hird. If the ref had been more used to big crowds............. then perhaps, or more likely probably, we would have got 3 points, at the very least 1 point. Even the Chesterfield manager and fans were honest enough to say it should have been a penalty. Neither of the keepers have had a good run in yet - Simon Eastwood was terrible for a while last season before he came good. Stephen Henderson was terribly nervous in his first games for us. Just have some patience is really what I'm saying, and don't be too quick to get rid. You'll notice this yourself as your own career progresses.
I agree with what you say, 3rd eye, BUT my only beef is the choice of our two keepers pre-season. Obviously, Steve Allen helped to choose John Sullivan, as he knew him at Charlton. Why wasn't Knightsie asked to run the rule over him before we snapped him up ? I wish to goodness we had let AFC Wimbledon pip us to his signature though. Obviously wage levels affect the class of signings we can make, but if only we could have persuaded for example, Reading, to have subsidised the wages of Mikkel Anderson, allowing him to join us on a season long loan, instead of letting him return to Denmark, where they can hardly monitor his progress on a regular basis. To my mind, goalkeeper is our one truly weak position, and I'm sorry to say this could be our 'Achilles Heel' this season - I do hope I'm proved to be wrong in my assumptions.
0-0 at half time, and we have played very well. Ryan Bird up front by himself is performing well in place of Big Pat, supported by Barcham & Holmes. Only 1,929 attendance this evening - approx. 370 of them Pompey fans. Not bad considering. Let us hope Birdy can find the back of the net in the second half, save having to go to penalties.
Opinions on the keepers are polarised Wooperts. Some fans are more convinced by Smith others by Sullivan. I always think the players have had to get past 10 men before facing the keeper. I just don't think we're going to know until one of them gets a good run. Smith seems to have made a career of being 2nd/3rd choice keeper and Sullivan is still young, he's just 25. He needs a good run before we really know.
Torquay miss !!! Lee Mansell fires into the stand. Tom Craddock for Pompey - scores......4-2 now to PFC Torquay score - 4-3 to Pompey now Yassin Moutakil scores for Pompey........5-3 on pens.........Pompey are through........well done lads..........even John Sullivan for keeping a clean sheet during the 90 minutes.
