Cisse and others had to come out of position to cover the left side when Fulham were countering. Santon and Marv are a poor defensive pair. We really miss Jonas' defensive qualities on the left side.

Santon needs someone who can cover him when he bombs forward. He lacks game reading abilities as it is, he's gonna leave the door open again and again if we don't have someone to cover him.

Jonas works hard and defends well, and I think we miss him.

Marv just can't do the same defensive work. I'd play Gouffran on the left next game, but I still don't think he's going to be able to do the job we need at the back.

Either that, or I would play Dummet LB with Santon in front of him. They could cover each other. Both with decent defending ability and good going forward.

Either way we need somone with defensive abilities to help Santon out or we're going to get hurt on that side.

Thought Santon was superb again defensively today. He has looked brilliant so far. I'd have no problem moving Santon forward though as Dummett has looked really good. Or we could just sign Moses/Ince or the like and have some pace and/or power in front of him. I like the idea of Moses on loan.

Odemwingie and Defoe would make us a considerably better outfit... Unfortunately they're both old and likely overpriced.

Lets hope it continues but can see it.

My opinion would be for him to either be switch to his natural right side or even played as a wing back with 3 cb's
Or on either wings as he has great ability going forward.

We don't need Jonas back, he will just be the liability that he always is

Having Debuchy and Santon ploughing forward is fine, but we need to maintain a defensive cover line. What needs to happen is that when one goes forwards the other drops in line with the two CB and they spread the across the back with a CM holding or if they both go forward both CM need to drop back slightley to cover. If we played in this way we wouldn't need to deploy Jonas or Anita in wide positions to cover an "overlapping fullback and can utilise Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Gouffran, Obertan etc in supporting positions for our forwards.

It's about co-ordination and communication amongst the players on the pitch to maintain positional cover.

This. When I saw the title I thought it was satirical but It actually seemed serious in the actual post. If we are slightly more naked down the left, I think it is a good price to pay for being x4 more effective in attack

nnnnnah. gutierrez, as much as i love him, has ran his course for us,
I'd rather Marveaux constantly drifitng to the middle and atleast making a few half decent passes than gutes' attempts at passing or crossing.
Even when he was good he wasn't much of an chance-maker. and i don't want a defensive winger, i want mine to attack

The likes of Geoge Graham would have slapped it into them in a matter of days......it was one of the first things he did at Spurs, Edinburgh and Carr were great at getting forwards but he told them that they were defenders and as such they had to co-ordinate with the rest of the team - this hardline mentality saw them lift the League cup and reverse their league form.

What is this based on, exactly? Santon's defended exceptionally well against both West Ham and Fulham, and neither - especially Fulham - have caused us any problems down our left side; and I certainly don't miss his propensity to concede possession, create nothing and invite pressure. Anyone advocating his inclusion should be sectioned, quite frankly.

    And you've made this up.

    :)

Last season he was considered our best player til christmas... This year he's started pretty well again... Maybe he just doesn't have the legs for a full season?

Just young and needs time. Very impressed at beginning of last season, wanted him castrated in the 2nd half. I think he has matured again and is showing signs he can be more selective. He will push on if so. Lets not forget he like everyone else needs a big season to make the world cup.

    'We miss Jonas'

We do, but only as a squad player. If he starts every game then we will just see his shortcomings again and again. I don't think we were exposed down the left yesterday anyway.

for all of Jonas defensive qualities his attacking attributes just aren't there. What we need is a decent left winger to whip in those balls.

Jonas had a poor season last season, but it really annoys me when people pick out particular players in **** seasons. You can't name anyone who played well all season.

Jonas is a good player defensively and if we get going this season, I think we can see the return of the Jonas from the seasons before.

    We could use him.
