Child of the 70s lads so was a toss up between this and Punk, went for the spiky hair and bondage strides. In my mellower years though I do enjoy a bit of Northern Soul mainly thanks to a Army mate of mine from Wigan who did the Casino regularly. Some very good tunes around still good shout, hadn't heard of some of these if I'm honest but very good tunes all the same.
I'm the same as you, punk was the first time I really got into music properly. I've had Northern Soul around me for years, but probably not listened to that much till fairly recently.
I was born in 81 and missed both. Northern Soul just takes over, well, all soul for that matter. Are you getting the bug ReedioHeed? You seem to be listening to quite a bit.
Lets just say, I have a bit time on my hands at the moment, and listening to a lot of music. Rather than stick to my normal stuff, I've been having some diversity and becoming more tolerant to other genres such as Northern Soul. I will go as far to say, some of the music does have it merits.
Anyone familiar with the 'Blues Brothers' film will know Stax Records/Atlantic,that was the Soul music I knew Otis,Sam & Dave,Wilson Pickett etc but the house band were tremendous Booker T. Jones (organ, piano), Steve Cropper (guitar)Lewie Steinberg (bass), and Al Jackson, Jr. (drums) later to be replaced with Donald "Duck" Dunn,I guess I was too young for the 'Northern Soul' thing but I could say same thing about Stax so I'm all ears, give me your recommendations.BTW Otis was and still is 'The Man'. No, I'm already turning into a heretic, how far do I go. Actually you should start a thread. Some what? Another thread needed............
Booker T and the MG's were Otis Readings original backing group before the Stax tours. The Marquees chipped in as backing band on the tours too. Have you seen the Stax Tour of Norway mate? It's fantastic, all the greats in one show. Sam and Dave steal the show for me but it's all good. Love that particular gig because the crowd is entirely made up of white people and they all look like they're tripping their boxes off. If you're a Stax man then you're sure to love funk too. Just set up a thread. Feel free to add to it.
How did it come about that a casino in Wigan started playing soul music or was it happening across the country? Don't really know much about it but I like the music
