One of my friends works in Iraq, and has done for about 6 years now, in his opinion the situation there now is the worst it has ever been since he has been there. He believes that the differences between the Sunni and Shia factions are not reconcilable, and although it isn't a popular belief, that the way Hussein ruled the country was just about the only way to prevent them from killing each other en-mass.
That's irrelevant mate. The military is full of people who are already willing, and many of the people dying in Syria are not willing. Don't want to go to war? Don't join the ****ing army. It's not like we're being drafted.
My favourite thing about this vote is that Gove apparently lost it when the results came in. Reports of him calling rebel Conservatives traitors and accusing them of backing Assad's regime.
This argument has been gone through many times before. There are people in this World, who find themselves through preference, necessity or just downright lack of choice, who enter the armed forces. Part of the remit of those forces is that they may see war action, which may maim or kill them. That is a possible outcome and it is part of their job. Just as a motorcycle despatch rider in London knows that he/she could be injured or killed the next day. I know the motorcycle rider isn't ordered to bring injury/death nearer to themselves, but it is part of the risk. It is also part of the risk of being a soldier. I have sympathy for anyone ordered into action, and I wouldn't choose it myself as a career, but that's the choice we make.
It's only irrelevant if it doesn't bother you about sacrificing more soldiers.
"Don't want to go to war? Don't join the ****ing army" A bit of a puerile comment there. The military do their duty wherever they are sent and some pay the ultimate price. Parliament has chosen not to get involved this time and I'm pleased with that, we've seen more than enough war recently.
"It's not like we're being drafted" I'm sure you're happy with that. As I sad before it's much easier to take the moral high ground when you've nothing to lose.

Anyone find all that guff about conservative v labour completely brainless today or is it just me? We're taking about people's lives here I don't want to hear what anyone thinks about the PM. Anyway don't want to bang on as writing on my phone is effort.
