Good luck with that. My old cat used to loll all over my legs when I was in bed which made it impossible to roll over and get to sleep. Died a year ago due to complications from hyperthyroidism. She was on hormone tablets for a long time which were nearly impossible to get her to eat as they obviously tasted bad, had to take her for blood tests fairly regularly too. Anyway, she ended up collapsing suddenly one morning, rushed her to the vets but she died when we got there. Had a very long, very good life at least. It's funny because she wasn't ours from being a kitten. We bought a male kitten about a year before she showed up as a stray, we took her in and it obviously pissed off our original cat because he did a runner and we never saw him again! So I always had mixed feelings towards the batard!
What is the rights of human beings? It differs so much from country to country. Some animal activists (very very small percentage) do that which is unacceptable obviously Of course I wont tell you its right for a neighbourhood to be terrorised by Cujo (Why would I?) 9/10 a dog is excitable and wont bite Not wrong for Africans to farm, wrong for Chinese fishing boats to herd up dolphins with large nets, drag them into shallow waters then butcher them and leave them squirming in the sea (as one unacceptable act). I dont know where the African farmers come into it? I contribute towards animal charities, im married to a pig (only joking!) As for charging towards cannon fire do you think the soldiers wanted too as well? Are we stupid for committing such acts?
See. There you go ranting again. I don't give a bugger if he broke the law. It's up to the court based upon both the law and the evidence presented to decide in any law has been broken and if so what punishment is deemed appropriate. The farmer did face that justice but why didn't the dog owner also face a charge. It was her responsibility to look after those dogs and ensure that they presented no harm to anybody or were put in harms way themselves. She singularly failed in her duty as an owner. I'm not a dog owner but I live in a rural part of the country with a number of flocks of sheep nearby. It therefore seems stupidly arrogant to me to let a pet dog run free on land where those sheep may be. Instead of ranting on here, why are you not organising an appeal against the court's decision - surely that would do more good?
Yeah my other cat died of liver failure and had loads done at the vets. True, I've never seen a horse on mastermind, but the 'dumbness' of animals is all the more reason to treat them humanely. And that's the point. you confuse (deliberately) the logical and rational desire to treat animals (even those we eat) considerately with some sort of sentimental schmaltz. I was out walking my lab when he was a puppy and he ran towards a rottweiller on a lead that was muzzled. the owner asked me to take my dog away (which I of course did) as he explained that it wasn't his dog and he was walking it for the RSPCA. He explained that he didn't know how it would react as it had been kept in a single room for five years and just used as a breeding machine. Yes, the sentimental part of me was sickened as to how anyone could do that to an animal, but the practical side of me thought that surely the poor thing would have been better of humanely destroyed than the existence it now had. The difference between you, me, fool and this farmer is that I don't think I have the right to break the law based upon my opinions or career status (or land ownership) , to then lie about it and then expect leniency because this is the way it's done in the countryside. That and the fact that I don't think I have the right to simply kill any creature simply on the basis that it's not human.

Coming back to reality - but it has been fun playing the agent-provocateur! I totally accept that no animal should be treated badly. How' badly' is classified is always going to be contentious and vary from state to state. There will always be practices that those from one culture believe are cruel when they view the activities of another culture in relation to animals. So should the Spaniards stop bull fighting because we don't like it? Closer to home, should course fishing be banned because some animal rights protesters dislike the sport/pastime? The scenario that I put about the child and the dog happens nearly every day. For goodness sake the child endures the terror and has no way of knowing if the dog will or will not bite. Yet the owner has no conscience about the trauma that his/her dog is causing! I don't know about the Chinese fishing activities. If that is their traditional way of catching dolphins then who are we to criticise - after all we don't sea the terror amd mayhem when cod and haddock are caught in a trawl do we? The reason I mentioned the African farmers was because of your reference to the larger african wild animals. To sustain them they need large tracks of land. However the farmers in Africa also need that land to feed their growing populations. So there will always be a tension. At it's ultimate point I'm clear about where I stand - people are more important than animals. As for the soldiers. There does come a time when humans do have to engage in war and commit acts that, in peace time they would not envisage doing. History appears to teach us that the best we can do is to try and limit the number of times that we actually do have to go to war. Must say though - it has been fun

As far as I am aware, humans are the only animals on the planet who demonstrate the full aptitude to do/have either. Yes we do have the right to make other species extinct if we want to. Sometimes it is in our best interests as a species to do so. I would gladly exterminate every malarial mosquito if I could. Sometimes species will become extinct because of the spread of human activity and the resultant loss of habitats. So should we limit human population just to secure a future for other species? I think not! But back to these bloody dogs and the farmer. The court made a decision. You don't like it then contest it BUT also take the owner to court for gross negligence. But you won't do that will you because your like the other arrogant dog owners who feel that it's OK to let their 'pets' infect childrens play areas.
