Really looking forward to this just got my tickets through! Don't get to many games these days as work weekends! A) Terracing - it's been years since I stood on terracing ( actually Crusaders I think) B) Burton are an attacking team who score bucket loads but also concede a lot c) few youngsters like David and maybe Grimmer will start D) players needing fitness should play Bent/Amorebieta/kaca and hopefully Frei
Got a seat for the game. As you say should play players that need Match practice. But managers keep saying that players need a least six games to get match fit, so may be because of the internationals coming up they should stick to the strongest team. Burton seem to be playing well and it will be a tough test. Like to get a good run in the cup this year.
Stockdale Grimmer. Amorebieta. Hughes. Briggs Dejagah. Karagounis. David. Kacaniklic Ruiz Bent with Frei and Rodders to play some part This is what I'm hoping for
I've just posted on the Arsenal thread, saying we could go one of two ways for this one. There's a case for playing the likes of Ruiz, Dejagah, Kaca and others who haven't had much chance yet this season. There's also a case for playing a close to full strength team, to give everyone more chance to get used to each other and speed up the process of the first team gelling together. From the second half against Arsenal, I don't think they read Bent's movement yet and so they don't play the right ball at the right time for his runs. If that's the case, there's more value playing the kind of line up that Jol anticipates fielding against Newcastle.
Jol has said today the team needs more time to gel, to me that means they need playing time together, so we need to start with a strong team, and take it from there, depending on how the game is going. Knowing our luck it will go into extra time. Jol has said this after the Arsenal game: Next up for the Whites is a trip to Burton Albion in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening, and Jol explained he may make some alterations to his side for the tie. “I think there will be a few changes because we’ve got 20 players,” he said. “Today I had to leave Ashkan Dejagah out, and Rodallega was not in the 18 [man squad], so of course we’ve got quality players on the bench. “So I think we will play other players but won’t exaggerate because we want to go to the next round.”
I take your point Cap'n, but who is to say that these three aren't part of the full strength team? I think the main thing we have gained this summer is squad depth. Whilst we still have some weak points (e.g. LB), we do have genuine competition for other places, for the first time in a while (wingers, CD, DM, the fluid attack). I'm really pleased to see Aaron playing well and regularly again. I noticed that somebody suggested Amorbieta could cover LB...has he done this before? or is it just an idea that he might be able to?
Left back is his secondary position. He can play there and has for Bilbao in the past when he had to through injury to other players.
Looking at the U21 team that lined up against Norwich this afternoon, it's fairly clear what Jol's intentions are going to be against Burton. And that is, to start with his "reserve" team. The only problems are that we don''t have a "reserve" right back and whether Amorebieta is fit. So the starting line-up will probably be: ...............Stockdale........... ..Riether...Senderos..Amorebieta/Hughes...Briggs.. ...............Boateng....Kara.... ..Dejagah.......Ruiz.............Kaca... ...................Hugo....... Subs: Etheridge, Hangeland, Riise, Taarabt, Kasami, Mesca, Trotta,
looking at your prediction of Jols selection Cottager,if picked lookes somewhat of a disaster to me. Senderlos will he be giving away to many free kicks,or worse penalties. Hugo.a non contributing factor again. Briggs could again be an embarrassment. I sincerely hope i am wrong, but less than a convincing win in my eyes proves nothing.
My guess at Burton Line up ...............Stockdale........... ..Grimmer...Senderos..Hughes...Briggs.. ...........Boateng....Karagounis.... ..Dejagah.......Ruiz.............Mesca... ...................Bent....... Subs Etheridge, Riether, Hangeland, Kacaniklic, Parker, Sidwell, Duff, Rodallega, Trotta.
The opposition will have Rory Delap lining up against us tonight. please log in to view this image My goodness the chap has longevity. Obviously we (and most others) will remember him for his time at Stoke, where his throw-ins were infamous for not only for their threat but also in their preparation time. Ensuring that the ball was not in play, on average, for 12 minutes of the 90 (according to Sky). However, my first memory of him is back in season 1996/97 when he scored with a header against us in an away game at Carlisle. We still won 2-1 though and of course gained promotion, under Micky Adams, from the old Division 3 that year.
He looks a bit red in the face in that photo. Obviously a lot of effort goes in to one of those throws.
For me Bent is the one player who has to start. If Jol thinks he's short of match practice, this is a chance to give him some ahead of Saturday. If Jol thinks the team needs time to get used to his runs, this is a chance to give that. The only way he shouldn't start is if Jol doesn't intend him to have a role at the weekend. Personally, I'd play Kaca on the left, and either Dejagah or Ruiz on the right. Between them, you can make a case for Berbatov (building up their understanding), Taarabt, Kasami, or Ruiz. To go back to an old theme that some of us (okay, me) keep banging on about, this could be a chance to see how Kasami does in a deeper central position. If he can't cut it there against Burton, he won't be up to snuff in the Premier League. This would be my preferred team: Stockdale Reither Hangeland Amorbieta (if fit) Briggs Boateng Kasami Ruiz Taarabt Kacaniklic Bent Hangeland and Reither are there to add a little continuity to a much-changed line up. Parker and Berbatov are rested rather than dropped - we know all about them in their positions and, for now, they are both secure as starters. If Kasami isn't working out in the centre, Karagounis, Sidwell or Parker could come off the bench to rescue things. It's a shame to deny Mesca and Grimmer their chances, but I think the greater priority is to build a bit of cohesion amongst the first-team pool. Everyone in this line up (except Stockdale and , perhaps, Briggs) could conceivably be a contender for a place in our strongest eleven.
I like the arguments about Bent and Kasami, Captain. In fact the only one I'd disagree with in your preferred team is Bryan on the right - simply because it's never worked with him there. That said, I still think Jol will have a mind to "use his 20 man squad" and give the likes of Hugo a start. PS Jack Grimmer was playing for the U21s in Norwich yesterday. As were the only other 'reserve' right backs, Christensen and Brister.
Good on ya Cookie - 'Standing at the Pirelli Stadium' has a certain ring to it. Give the lads an extra shout from the rest of us. PS I take back what I said in my last post about Hugo playing - it looks as though he's on paternity leave.
He's in the squad according to the Fulham facebook page. Stockdale; Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise; Karagounis, Parker; Dejagah, Ruiz, Taarabt; Bent Subs: Etheridge, Briggs, Boateng, Sidwell, Kasami, Kacaniklic, Rodallega So the Capt. gets his wish and Bent starts.
Taarabt, Parker and Bent have all pretty much missed pre-season. Jol clearly wants to give them game time, so its no surprise at all that all three start.
