When we had Redknapp, we where an enjoyable team to watch, we had exciting players, VDV, Modric, Bale etc, heck even bastian schweinsteiger said he enjoyed watching us play, but would be sign for us? No....well unless he was at the end of his career and wanted to try something different. Players like Rooney (at his age and stage of his career) aren't after a new exciting challenge at a club which fights for 4th, they want a new exciting challenge at a club which fights for the title or challengers for the champions league title. The only chance we have of signing world class players, are players like VDV or Sniejder, players which have been unhappy abroad and need a new challenge. Domestic players like Rooney would not even consider us.

I appreciate it is highly unlikely but did anyone expect Osvaldo to go to Southampton? VDV to come to us? Tevez to go to West Ham? Falcao to go to Monaco? If and it's a big IF - Rooney is up for more than just CL or money, we would be a very interesting prospect. My point was more - why not try and sign him? If he says no he says no. That is how I read it too. We are looking to sell Bale to United / Madrid then have enquired to Chelsea about Mata.
