You see Drogs I would have thought you could do better than just anounce that my argument was rubbish, you have tried subsequently. Of course my comment is provocative but it's a bit more interesting than 'rubbish'. CL football is a draw that we can't offer yet but it has nothing to do with the manner of this signing (if that's what it is) This is Roman flexing his wallet for all the wrong reasons. Not signing a player that the team needs. That should be obvious to everybody if the reports are true and Mourinho's comments would appear to confirm that. Now try to address the argument without talk of rubbish and dense.
But I gave my reasoning as to why I labeled your point as rubbish, it wasn't as if I just said you were. See you didn't mention Roman before otherwise I wouldn't be disagreeing as neither of us know if that is factual. This is about you calling him a mercenary, which I refuted with perfectly valid points. Money will come into a player choosing between clubs every time, that's just football, but I disagree that Willian would be choosing us purely down to the size of his wage packet.
There is no doubt that Willian is a merc, he signed for Anzi for crying out loud! Playing in a league that means little to those not who are not Russian and for a club very unlikely to challenge for the CL or EL despite having a few big name players...he's a merc no doubt. Of course if he'd come here he'd be OUR merc so we might defend him a bit but we'd still all acknowledge the blindingly obvious. I wouldn't say no to signing players like that if they're of the right quality and at the right price to reflect that but Willian is not a £30 mill player (and before anyone says anything about Bale's price the two situations and players are completely different) so if someone else wants to spend that amount of money on him and then stick him on the bench thats their outlook not mine. As flaspur says we want players who want to play for Spurs, or at least players like Benny who admits his nature but still expresses an affinity for the club, or at least he used to! Willian is clearly a player who chases money and fair enough for him if he wants to do that, but that sort of player I'd rather not have at the club, especially if we're going to have to outbid Chelsea in transfer fees and wages to get his services.
That's you opening comment Drogs, but fair enough you have put your argument since. This move by Abramovich will have repercussions and we will see what they are, but if Levy refuses to sell Bale as a result, it could backfire on him. We might sign a better player as well.
Im pretty sure I have seen at least 2 of your mods call us goons, so why is it such a crime to call you spuds but fine for you to call us goons, seem like a bit of double standards.
Not sure this is the right thread to be having this discussion, but - I'm sorry - I simply cannot let you get away with this, "Goon" is merely a shortening of "Gooner" and it is something that has been said for years. "Spud" on the other hand is not a mere shortening (both "spud" and "Spurs" are one-syllable words), it has been created purely as a term of offence. More importantly, the behaviour of your mods, in general, is appalling and cannot, in any way, shape, manner or form, be compared to the dignified way in which our mods import themselves, especially when they are guests on the fora of rival supporters.
Anyway! Will.i.an - i would have happily taken him tbh, but i didn't (as far as i can remember) rib Liverpool about missing out on him and i understood their point and anger about missing out on him. In fact last night i said we deserved it for the number of times in recent history we have "stolen" Liverpool targets. The truth is though that this one was slightly different in that it wasn't really a "2 bids are in, make your choice" situation it was a "1 bid is, medical done, terms agreed, about to sign, oh here are chelsea". I don't blame Chelsea but the behaviour of the player (if this is all true of course) won't have me crying into my hot milk tonight if he goes there Mourinho's comments however show zero class. But then what do we really expect from him? He's like Fergie - eg, a twat
I know, and prior to the part you dislike is the reason What repercussions by the way? And fair play if you sign a better player, like I said before I'd rather we didn't spend £30 odd million on Willian. What's wrong with these boards HIAG, is people not giving reasons and instead fiiring stupid emoticons at other posters. Not calling you slightly dense.
Given the importance of this position in the Spurs team we really need a fully commited player who wants to play for us.
Come on, Drogs! My comment - namely, the extensive use of the "laughter" and singular use of the "slap-head emoticons - is a perfectly understandable one, given your insistence that Willian's move to CFC has not been motivated primarily due to money.
Yup, he's a mercenary for choosing against all odds to join Anzi last season - he was following the money, and it's looking likely he's doing it again. Willian would have been a nice addition, even at an over-inflated value of £30m, but if he has dumped Spurs AFTER a medical, then I for one am pleased he's not joining us. So either way, whether we sign him or not, I'm happy!
Personally, I think people are getting angry at the wrong guy. Chelsea have waited until the 11th hour to bid despite everyone knowing he was available for a week or so. That's not what grates me about Chelsea's hand in it though. It's more that that they don't need the player and by biding their time cost them money in the deal but they don't care. These are old grievances with Chelsea though, just another reminder. As I said yesterday they'll have £160mill worth of attacking midfielders and wingers on their books and £80mill worth of strikers. That's insane. It sounds like this was his agents doing though and before anyone says it's Willian's fault, does anyone think footballers have the intelligence to pull something like this off? I'm sure Willian will get plenty of games though, it'll be other Chelsea players who have been doing well, like DeBruyne, Moses and Schurrle who will lose game time. Ultimately he's got a lot of work to do to get into Brazil's squad next summer so regular Premier League and Champions League football will help and the potentially challenging for the title will help even more.
Rumours are already rife that Madrid are now after Suarez no doubt because of rumours that the Bale negotiations have halted, this inspires further roumours that Arsenal will not get their target striker from Madrid. Repercussions Drogs. Plus of course Spurs will be even more fired up when we play Chelsea.
I wouldn't be happy with signing him for £30 mill, I think thats way over the odds, and even if we're buying before Bale is going surely the whole point of that is to AVOID paying over the odds for players like Willian who, while talented, shouldn't be commanding that kind of fee. I hope Chelsea get him because I don't think he'll help them all that much given what they've already got, and I'd rather see him go there than Liverpool because he'd strengthen Liverpool much more.
The way I see it is this. If Willian's mercenary instincts, causing him to act with appalling disrespect towards us, is the reason for us keeping Bale for at least one more season, I will be absolutely over the moon! Paulinho, Capoue, Chadi, Soldado, a much-improved Townsend, Kaboul back to his best, Dawson playing like a tiger, Rose looking like a half-decent replacement for Benny, Naughton giving Walker some stiff competition, Vertonghen and Sandro to come back shortly from injury, AND Bale! Isn't this the kind of dream team that we've all been crying out for for so long?
Look at it from a different angle Liverpool wanted him, no European football. Spurs came in and offered Europa league football. Chelsea came in and offered CL football. No brainer for Willian IMHO. Also, there doesn't seem to be many of us on this board that seem bothered that Willian will sign for Chelsea and there doesn't seem many Chelsea fans who actually want him!
