Fuuuck me! Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling used anti-terrorism rules to take control of assets held in Britain by a troubled Icelandic bank. Darling stepped in to protect deposits made by U.K. residents in Reykjavik-based Landsbanki Islands hf, which the government of Iceland seized yesterday. About 300,000 U.K. account holders held deposits at Landsbanki's Internet bank, Icesave. ``To protect U.K. economic interests the government has frozen the funds and financial assets held by Landbanksi,'' Stephen Timms, financial secretary to the Treasury, said in Parliament in London today. Icesave yesterday blocked customers from accessing deposits at its online bank. The U.K. Treasury said it will guarantee all customer deposits at Icesave, even those above the Britain's 50,000-pound ($87,800) deposit protection plan. The Treasury released a document to Parliament yesterday showing it used sections of the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 to take control of the bank's assets, saying in the statement the bank's collapse may harm the U.K. economy. ``The reason we took this action which was extraordinary action was in order to protect the interest and to try to ensure there was money there for creditors and depositors in the U.K,'' Prime Minister Gordon Brown's spokesman, Michael Ellam, told reporters in London today. ``In the view of the chancellor there was clearly a potential systemic risk, and that is why the action was taken yesterday in relation to depositors.'' http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aXjIA5NzyM5c Essentially anti terrorism laws enable you to break international, national laws
Hardly punishment is it for manning. Are you a gooner? Is that you Hans? Your fans are getting it up the jacksie more than manning by the look of it, from Wenger and the Arsenal board
Seen that, and of all the things they could have written about that's what the BBC publish on their website.
he's a traitor to his country and was guilty as sin he put people's lives at risk and got off very lightly
If you want to talk about president's pardoning war crimes, Bill Clinton springs to mind much faster than GWB. All the people who avoided the draft by fleeing to Canada instead of following the law were pardoned by Clinton. Not sure why you would use GWB, tbh.
Seriously, avoiding the draft? forcing young men to go fight a war they do not agree with, forcing them to die for the political agenda? You're a lunatic be quiet, Clinton has **** all to do with this thread, manning has said he'll ask Obama for a pardon so it was related to the topic.
And this is why I had you ignored... You have your opinions, and everyone else is either a lunatic or ******ed. I'm ignoring you again. Btw, you do know this is a football forum and not a bash USA forum, right? That's every thread of yours.
That's an overgeneralisation. The freezing laws have been in place since the start of WWII, they were just updated by the 2001 Act to make it easier to apply them to terrorists. If the financial crisis had happened in 2000, the assets of the Iceland banks could still have been frozen by the existing legislation which had nothing to do with terrorism. The terrorism angle was just played by the Icelandic PL to try and get some media attention. As for Manning, he had the right intentions, but the wrong approach. He (or she) claimed to have been selective, trying to reveal examples of broken laws without compromising security. But in the end he released about 700,000 documents, most of which were innocuous diplomatic cables and battlefield reports which revealed US tactics and strategies. The vast majority of those contained no embarrassing information and did nothing other than make it harder for diplomats to trust the US, and harder for the US military to cooperate with its allies. I think Manning probably started out with good intentions, but along the way he got carried away with how easy it was to get access to these documents. If he was genuinely acting in good conscience then he could have only released the really damaging documents like the Apache video and details of Guantanamo. As it is, I think he stopped trying to do good and just decided to grab and leak everything he could, which in a way makes his approach no better than that of the US when trying to fight 'terrorism' around the world.
Some good points, he was working in a system that ostracised his type though which did not help his disposition, he certainly became erratic and probably did lose sight of why he started out doing what he did, some of it might have been payback as it were for his feelings towards the Military or government. I do think it was not possible for him to filter the data though Swarbs, not in his position and the risks he was taking. It is worth mentioning that those who committed war crimes, ones actually caught on video he released have faced no charges. The military he served has committed atrocities since the 40s and not one person of any rank has faced charges of war crimes charges of any kind.
There were 2 videos 1 the hellfire attack on a building that contained women and children and vaporized a passer by. 2 the Apache attack where even an untrained eye could see that was not an RPG. I was watching that video and I heard the pilot say RPG and I actually said aloud thats not a ****ing!! rpg while watching it, I am not a trained military pilot and the video I was watching was lower resolution than the pilots view. RPGs are not white for a start! do not have big fat lenses and the pilot on the radio intentional lied several times in the video. lie one the report of firing, those men were not firing on anything, they were talking. Reason, wanting permission to engage. lie two that the people arriving in the van were picking up weapons, **** were they picking up weapons, it was obvious to anyone what they were doing, reason again, wanting permission to fire on the van. That crew were more than eager to engage anything they could and killed innocent people and I also heard the stupid bastard say what are those people doing bring kids into a war zone, the kids in the van, they live in a ****ing war zone created by the US military And when I say no US military personnel have faced war crimes charges I mean ever, and I could fill the next 20 pages with war crimes committed by the US military, but I won't The rules of engagement in iraq were in fact the war crimes committed by the US in this case
They've had many such 'accidents' with Apaches and A-10's, several including blue-on-blue massacres of our own troops in mis-identified armoured cars and personnel carriers in both gulf wars. It doesn't help that the air crew are off their heads on amphetamines.
