Nolan - No contract offered?

  1. I think a 2 year stay at the club for Nolan is long enough. Barton is the one i want for long term.

However, we cannot just start getting rid of the core/heart of the team.

Barton and Nolan are the two players that give us heart. They were the difference on the derby games, the two players that can play to the occasion and play the game.

I'd let Nolan run out his last two years, then perhaps offer him a new contract after wards but only on 20/25k a week.

Agree with Tash, I can't under any circumstances see him in the starting XI 3 seasons from now. Frankly, I can't in 2 seasons time even. Not to say I'll want him out of the club, but not extending his contract right now beyond that seems more than sensible and doesn't mean he's out the door!

I think Nolan will be as good as useless in 2 years anyway to be frank. Maybe a one year extension would be OK but he's a poor athlete, he wont be anywhere near the starting XI in 2 years.

Doesn't being a poor athlete show he can be good in two years time. Most players that are amazing athletes usually can't keep up when they get older (Owen, Ronaldo, etc) whereas the Alan Shearers and Kevin Nolans seem to go on forever as they never needed to rely on pace and had the brain and technique. I can see Nolan developing into a Kevin Phillips type striker in a couple of seasons

Hopefully this is a story about nothing. As long as they sign him up when he is getting down to a year. Very important. I hold my hands up about him and say I got it wrong when I thought he wasn't good enough for the PL. It does seem strange that they have been in negotiations, Pardew stating on arrival that getting the likes of him and Barton on long term contracts being high on his agenda, and then they pull the plug (if they have). Hopefully they are not playing these kinds of games because this just hurts morale. Make no mistake we stayed up last year because of the passion the likes of Nolan and Barton brought, coupled with the team spirit built by Hughton, Smith, Harper, Barton and Nolan over two years. Very important to the club so should be treat with respect by the hierarchy. i.e. if they started negotiations they should complete them and not mess the players around. Who knows.

Interesting point, I just wonder if the way he fails to look after himself will mean he cant even manage that. The footballing brain is there, but I think he'll retire relatively young.

There is something that just makes you think he won't be able to continue. I know he's not, but I imagine him as the player that turns up to training with a hangover and then spends it playing football golf while the rest are doing laps

He probably only wants a one or two year extension anyway. As I say as long we're not moving goalposts on people like we have with Hughton and Barton. (possibly even Carroll, who knows) I'm happy to wait as long as we haven't started then stopped. Its paper talk at present and i'll await confirmation from the skip before assuming anything. I find it hard to believe they are stupid enough to mess the captain about by starting and stopping negotiations. Well maybe not hard to believe, but even for this regime that would be incredibly stupid.

Should give him a 'contract for life' like Raul and Casillas.
