I don't know where it is but there's a pub down there called The Hobbit, supposed to do pretty good beer, not sure about food though, although there is the usual franchises like Frankie & Benny's down near the port, there's also a few in town but I never had time to check anything out, it was always in & out with only a few hours to spare.
Hope this is of some use.

Coriander lounge for Indian can be very busy but ring and they will look after you. It is my all time favourite resturant.
The Ranco Grill is said to be tops for steaks.
Platform Tavern good food, and its a micro brewery, good ale. But might not serve late.
Look on a map and Bedford Place, London Road, Above Bar and Below Bar are the central areas for food and drink. The students are not in town, so you may find it a bit quite up the top end of town. PM me with where you are staying.

Avoid the Food Factory, it's like a prison canteen.

Pompey's quite near - around port Solent is ok. Lots of restaurants to choose from, but set around a marina. Or head into Gun Wharf Quays for a Wagamama, which is possibly the best chain restaurant in the UK IMHO. Chicken Katsu Curry - fantastic.

That's like saying "staying in Hull, eat in Grimsby".
Wagamama in Southampton, next to MacDonalds, Nandos, etc. is all mass market rubbish.
If you want that you may as well go to Ikea and have meatballs and chips!

I actually have to say that if you fancy a trip to the Isle of Wight, get on the Red JeT to Cowes, get the river taxi to the Folly Inn, great food, landlord from Hull and on Friday and Saturday nights they dance on the tables.

A newspaper is the answer, just sit reading the paper and you look like you dine out on your own all the time.

The Financial Times is best, it stops the riff-raff from talking to you.

    Melu

Is the Juniper Berry still on the go? Used to go in there 30 odd years ago if I was in that neck of the woods.
Not to partake by the way, just to view.
If you don't understand what the Juniper is about it's were all the tranies' used to go.

The Juniper was closed ages ago. One of my mates made the mistake of getting,"up" on the stage. He never accepted that the feather boa yielding stripper was a man.
