Religion in all its forms started because human beings are the only animal capable of asking the question: Why? From time immemorial, human beings have attempted to understand and gain control of their environment, because they have the imagination to be fearful of the future. Religion attempted to provide certainty as well as moral guidance. Religion just like any other institution can become corrupted.

I think that without religion, there'd be anarchy as there are no foundations on how you should live your life and moral guidelines. There is a fair bit of war over different religious interpretations, however, as well as religion holding back technology and science.

Well I certainly didn't get my morals from religion.

No man is an island. Our society and laws are based on Christian values, so no one could help but pick up on that. Our background give us the frame, then we hang our individuality onto it.

Meant to add would also be true in a country if brought up in a society that was mainly Muslim or Buddhist etc.

That's leaving things wide open to all sorts of reminders about how immoral some actions of some religious people/organisations can be.

Sadly, the world is full of bad people who just need a reason to behave badly. It is either religious intolerance or racism/tribalism...often interrelated.

I'm talking about the 10 commandments, the seven deadly sins and to live a good life and then be rewarded in heaven and punished in hell if you do not, although what compromises as 'good'? Obviously the bits about forcing others to comform to your religion by whatever means, anti-homosexuals and anti-abortion bits are immoral but a fair few have ignored those bits and modernised their beliefs.

I dunno, I think the ten commandments are largely common sense and would come naturally to most people without actually having to be told. A few thousand years ago someone wrote those rules down for the first time and they presumably derived from common sense.

I have nothing wrong with faith, and people that feel the need to look up to a greater power believing in something if it helps them deal with difficult times.
I am absolutely against organised religion, and the power it wields over the easily led.
