Hello lads. Wine in the afternoon is definitely not on the agenda today...especially when it involves more than one bottle. Was quite keen on Wentworth today but it's been scratched...back to the drawing board. GL all.
Andy Flower, Alistair Cook and friends obviously got their money on the draw and Australia in the fifth Ashes Test. Then they decided to play two debutant bowlers in a side that now has two spinners on the flat batting track that is The Oval. Even Shane Watson managed a ton. So searching for sporting entertainment means York unless you are an Aussie. The weather may intervene at the weekend to guarantee a draw and the second day start has been delayed by a shower. On the ratings the opening cavalry charge should be between Sleeper King and Thunder Strike but I will give it a miss as half the form comes from small fields and is unreliable. There are more manageable numbers in the Lowther Stakes with just nine facing the starter. The form pick is clearly Lucky Kristale but she is burdened with a penalty for her Group 2 win at Newmarket. The three pounds may not seem a lot but can she give it to Queen Catrine, runner-up in a Group 3 last time, and Wind Fire, a Listed winner over five last week? The unknown quantity is nursery winner J Wonder for whom the best indication may be any market support. The Fugue is theoretically the best horse in the Yorkshire Oaks if you are prepared to accept that she will bounce back from her dire Eclipse showing (excuses offered). The Classic generation’s best representatives appear to be the English and Irish Oaks runners-up. The fast going has to be a big concern for Secret Gesture (with Wild Coco already a no-show). A blanket could have been thrown over the first five in Ireland and the slowly-run race saw Venus De Milo second with Scintillula less than a length back fourth and favourite Riposte close in fifth. The Cecil filly had been a good winner of the Ribblesdale at Ascot on fast ground and is no forlorn hope here. In the Galtres Stakes, Say steps up in trip after some good efforts over shorter (her second to Dank is the best bare form here) but now goes back up to twelve furlongs, over which she won a soft ground maiden. Our Obsession steps up in trip and whether she stays has to be taken on trust by her followers, unlike Star Lahib who has been consistent at this trip in handicaps and now is worth the chance stepping up in class. The one to beat looks like Songbird, just pipped in a Listed race last time when losing her unbeaten record. She is going the right way and this does not appear to require much improvement to win.
Wild coco taken out due to the going so am leaving it to mr Buick on smarty socks out of the omeara bunch currently around 12/1 e/w good luck all
Yet to post selections in the Ebor Comp: Dan Starkey Cityhull Brough Tiger Wooley Anyone having already selected a non-runner (Wentworth and Wild Coco are two) will need to post again advising it's replacement. Cheers!
My main hopes at York lie with Venus De Milo and Our Obsession. I'm also intrigued by the Godolphin horse Sandagiyr in the 15-05. I took 14's ew last night and with Wentworth's defection that has dropped to 10's. He had a bad start and trouble in running in the Betfred Mile and I'm expecting a good run today For me Lucky Kristale wins the Lowther and Sleeper King the opener. Sorted! Good luck all
Wentworth was 1 of my selections so now I'm left with lucky kristale and secret gesture ew. Good luck all today
