If we're doing "sides" rather than "side", then how about : ========Clemence Perryman Gough Roberts Mabbutt Ardilles Gascoigne Hoddle Waddle =======Lineker Allen I'd take that over the current team personally.
Please read what i wrote, later in the game. Yes they would, players are SO much fitter now than back then its not even funny. You've seen what a lack of fitness can do to a player returning from injury, it would be like that, but with 10 outfield players in such a condition
I'd still take the side I've got above to match any side in the current PL. We're talking late 80s/ early 90s here. They didn't exactly spend the week drinking and then turn up 10 minutes before kick off back then.
Gazza did, and i wouldn't be surprised if others did too. I think its a bit romantic to think the, arguably, more talented players of yesteryear would beat the, non-arguably, much superior athletes and not too shabbily talented players of today. Todays game is all about marginal gains, they eek every last part of performance out of these guys (ok, maybe not Ade and Benny), back then they were fit and talented but they weren't maxed out. And then there's the pace. There were quick players back then and before of course but nowadays pace is abundant throughout the team. A player hitting 10.x seconds for 100m isn't a big deal any more. However, if you brought that team forward and gave them all the same benefits of technology, improved training over the same period of time that the current team as had then yes i agree the older team would probably win. And if you could keep Gazza off the booze
There seems to be an idea circulating in the media that our wage bill is going to spiral out of control, for some reason. Assuming that these signings go through then I'd expect it to rise a little, but we've chopped a number of high earners too, which seems to have gone unnoticed. I'd expect us to get rid of a few more before the window's out, as well.
we might never know for sure but anecdotal evidence from people around at the same time suggest he had problems (whether they were just mental at that time or not i'm not sure) from the very earliest time in his career. This is way off topic now, but i do wonder what would have happened to Gazza had he been born 15 years later. He would have been much better looked after as a young lad, better trained and nurtured. He may not have all the problems he has now, and he probably would have been one of the best players of all time.
It shows their complete lack of understanding and non existent research. How long has Levy been running Spurs? Is he known for his poor accounting? Why do they employ these dorks?
Former Man Utd coach and Anzhi's very short-term manager Rene Meulensteen has had this to say about Willian: "I've worked with him for a short time but I really, really like him. He will be an asset for whoever's going to get him." "If it's Spurs that's going to get him they'll get an excellent player. He's very versatile, he can play in different positions, he's a very creative player and an excellent professional with a very good personality. "He's going to be a major trump card for Spurs if they can get the deal to go through." Sounds positive.
Agreed about Gazza. I should also mention a certain Mr. Best. Who had the same problem. To this day, still one of, if not THE most naturally gifted footballer I've ever seen.
You agree that when he played for us he would drink all week and turn up just before the game ? Sorry, but I don't believe that.
Sorry, no. I meant that it was such a shame that he wasted his naturally given talent...as did George Best.
There used to be quite a drinking culture, Greaves took to the field a number of times, the worse for wear, same with Best and others. Who know's but the players today are certainly a lot fitter, when they are not injured that is, and they seem to pick up more injuries nowadays.
So players that aren't getting pissed get more injuries than those that went out and got hammered? That's proof enough for me, off to the pub for my medication
If i didn't know better i'd think you were gonna push YV down the stairs and try to fob it off on him being drunk
