Hang on £10 billion... and of that the Hoops only pay £200 million? Who is going to stump up the other £9,800,000,000? Aren't we in a triple dip recession? Sounds like a massive white elephant to me... especially since it would be so close to that other massive (and 2008 so relatively recent) development in West London - Westfield, which (only) cost £1.6 billion!
Here are the proposed plans, we had them in another thread the last time the stadium was mentioned in the press. http://www.london.gov.uk/priorities/planning/consultations/old-oak-common Apologies for no proper link, I'm on my phone. I know for many the idea of a 40,000 seater stadium seems preposterous, especially having witnessed the last two seasons, but we have to think big if we do want success. My only concern with the proposed plans is we could end up making the same mistake Chelsea have made in not thinking big enough. They thought 40,000 would be enough, built homes and businesses around the ground with long term leases, now they're buggered as they can't expand. Now I know for many the idea of ever needing more than 40,000 is the stuff of cloud cuckoo land, but if you go back to the early 90's while we were in the ascendency and Chelsea were languishing in div 2, the idea of Chelsea ever being in this position was far more preposterous. I just hope if we tie in to this development we don't end up regretting it, as there will be no possibility of expanding. The other problem is that a project of this size will take far longer than if we were building the stadium as a stand alone project, which means in the interim we could still be struggling to compete while at LR with the financial fair play rules. But at least we are thinking forward.
Wed be buggered anyway as we are going to have a roof, I dont know of any ground that can be expanded that has a roof. If it could be done, we may not need more space to add a third tier anyway.
Yes - but there would have to be significant Retail, Education, Leisure etc. provision built in... otherwise it's just a giant sink estate like the Gorbals. It is a 30 year project with an 'estimated' completion date of 2048 - 4 phases, the first to be completed in 2022 with Crossrail/HS2 (East-West) might expect to open in 2026/27 Interestingly they say this: "The area to the north of the Grand Union Canal could be particularly important for kick starting the regeneration of the wider area. In this location, it may be possible for a major educational, health, leisure, entertainment or sports provider to help to act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the area, by frontloading the provision of infrastructure and giving the area an identity." So a stadium is seen as central to getting the project up and running. Either way... it's still a massive amount of money to find, and if the Olympic park/Wembley Stadium projects are anything to go by... that £10bn is very much a lowball figure.
£200m is way less than Id expect a stadium to cost. I thought the land only would be that amount. But as its a recession, there arent many companies willing to put money in so now is the best time ever to build something as the costs will never be cheaper.
I have had enough of talk ... this country at times is bloody useless ...talking about **** and making anything more complicates than it needs to be ... It would have been built in Europe by now and on budget. A QPR spokesman said: âWe are taking a good look at various long-term options to see which makes the most sense.â ... Good grief I have to work with these types each day ... they say nothing: please log in to view this image
Triple dip?! It wasn't even a double dip! That said, I'm hesitant about getting excited. [IEven if it happens, it doesn't mean life will be rosy and good. See Coventry.
Sorry... I was being flippant, but the massive cost of the entire project, the ongoing row about whether HS2 is actually needed and the fact that the whole project would be 30 years in the making does make it seem a fair way off..
Understood the point and agree - just making a [bad] joke about the political rhetoric at the moment. I've already got my coat.
Nice one centurion ... The extra funny thing is that we will take most of their zombie fans if this all comes off for us ... It will only take one Rupert to broadcast that they do a wonderful latte and a reasonable lemon drizzle uptown west and its:
This may be part of the infrastructure upgrade, so money already set aside. The Government have committed to upgrading Londons stations and infrastructure, Liverpool Street completed, Waterloo still ongoing, Euston Station planned and waiting to start but more likely a white elephant.
