'I know Stevie's first, but I'll have a go'

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by Super G Ted'inho, Aug 20, 2013.

  1. Fabio Borini has insisted he would relish the opportunity to replicate his stunning free-kick for the U21s at first-team level – but acknowledges that won't be easy with the likes of Steven Gerrard ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Italian international fired a double strike during the 4-2 win over Manchester United at Salford City Stadium and was in impressive form as he led the line for Alex Inglethorpe's side on Monday night.

Borini's first goal of the night was a long-range free-kick which flew past stopper Ben Amos and he admits he would like more set-piece duty.

"It was great to score from a free-kick because I've been taking them in training every day and for almost two years," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I took them at Swansea but here it's difficult to take one with Steven Gerrard and others in the team!"

The brace was Borini's first goals since firing for Italy in the U21 European Championships and he is now hoping to push on and challenge for a place in Brendan Rodgers starting XI.

"I enjoyed the goals and it was good to play 90 minutes again," he added.

"I can take a lot of confidence from the game. After the Euros I've been playing well and it was great to get these two goals to take on board for the weekend."

The No.29's second effort of the night came from a brilliant finish from a tight angle. It was similar to his effort for the first-team away at Valerenga in pre-season which on that night landed just wide of the target.

He said: "In Norway it was probably a little bit tighter an angle but I read the situation earlier and I had the confidence from the first goal to get the second one."

Borini admitted he was happy to play for the U21 team and boost his sharpness in the process.

He said: "The team were great and I know it's not easy when you get a player in at the last minute but they welcomed me and was good to play with them.

"Obviously I didn't know most of the players as we don't get the chance to train with them that much, but I trained with them on Sunday and played in the game.

"Some of our players were very young compared to the Man United side and they showed they can live with them."

I think he needs to actually watch us play first, Suarez is the first freekick taker. Gerrard and Agger are next depending on where it is.

Besides, he needs to concentrate on making the bench, never mind the first team before looking at taking freekicks!

I've seen him loads of good free kicks when he was at Swansea, he is down the pecking order but as long as he keeps doing it in training then I'm sure he'll get a chance at some point.

i watched that interview after the game and frankly i got the impression he didn't want to mention suarez by name at all. i think there's a lot more we don't know about true feelings about that guy in the dressing room. that is quite a supposition on my part i know.

but hey... it was a simple interview based on questions for the lfc tv crew after the game, nothing more. he was on the bench last week, he will be on the bench this week and if he wants to show a little ambition why knock it.

Also mate, don't want to ruin your thread or anything but there's a not safe for work option, just go to 'edit post' and go advanced and there should be a button there. <ok>

  7. Fair point but I wasn't knocking it, I just think think he has a couple of other targets to focus on before eyeing the freekicks.

Gerrard's direct free kicks arnt good enough (though he is the best in the world at delivery a free kick from deep and/or wide in to the box).

Suarez takes beautiful free kicks though. I have seen Borini take free kicks and he can hit them.

  15. Shame he can't take a corner for **** though eh? <laugh>

Gerrard is better (or used to be) at the indirect freekicks. His long range shooting isn't what it used to be either, I wouldn't mind if the keeper were saving them but he rarely hits the target anymore.

I've never understood this. He rarely beats the first man with them and if he does try a deeper one it loops too high and is more easily cleared.
I can't remember the last time we had a really good, consistent corner taker.

Apart from Charlie Adam, of course. <whistle>

  18. People are going to laugh here but Downing was (is?) a pretty good corner taker <laugh>

Our last truly decent takers were Meirles and before that, Alonso <ok>
