JAMES McCLEAN, who refused to wear a poppy on his Sunderland shirt for Remembrance Day last year, has said that he was forced to leave the club because of the hostile reaction to his political beliefs from the clubâs own supporters. McClean, a Republic of Ireland international, said after Wednesdayâs friendly draw against Wales in Cardiff: âIt wasnât how I was playing, itâs well-publicised, the off-field problems. Itâs never nice when your own fans are booing you before you even get on the pitch.â McClean, who has now signed for Wigan Athletic and came on as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth yesterday, enjoyed a prolific run under Martin OâNeill when he first made his debut for Sunderland in December 2011 and was included in Irelandâs squad for the 2012 European Championships. His form tapered off last season and he was
Got news for him mate it was the way he was playing that is why the fans were on his back, good luck to him at Wigan and, hopefully his political beliefs won't hamper him there.
He blames us, now that's a hoot. What about all of the other nationalities present in the team which had no issues in wearing the poppy. Good riddance.
Willie 1 foot blames us? He did himself no favours with his tweets. He's as thick as pig **** & a 1 season wonder. Good luck to him at Wigan but I'm glad he's gone. As Forrest Gump would say, that's all I have to say about that.
he makes a valid point like tbh. he was getting booed before he even came onto the pitch, not after a **** performance, and we all know why that was.
if he does not want to wear a poppy because of his beliefs, who are we to dictate to him? its what he does on the pitch that matters, and he was not very good at it, but to get booed before he comes on, is just plain obvious that its got nothing to do with what he was doing on the pitch. gardners ****, does he get booed as he's about to come on? does he ****.
I might piss alot of fella's off here but i don't really give a sh#t about McClean's comments regarding his time here and his time at wigan.. It's all in the past now i'm looking forward to Future!!!
I understand McClean and his views on the poppy. But I also have empathy with the people who booed him as well. I have lost 3 mates in afgan and Iraq and gave 5 more over there at the moment. The people involved in various wars are heroes. No matter what they are heroes and deserve respect. I didn't boo him but I have no issue with people booing him for that
I'm just glad the useless cnut has gone, as my grandad used to say 'couldn't kick the skin off a rice pudding'.
