I "like" posts. What does that do? How is it different to rep?
Rep is the star shape above the like/dislike buttons. If on a laptop you can see the last 5 reps (good or bad) by going to top right of the page and select control panel. Beyond that, you can't see it.
Like/dislike doesn't do anything as far as I know. Somewhere in your account there is a list of who has liked/disliked but I don't believe it changes your "status" at all.
So do people not get anything for me liking their posts? Is it not the same?
Or do "likes" translate to "points" and "reps" to "rep power"?

The green/red bar is just rep (reputation). I don't think you get anything for likes or thanks, but I can see in the Post Thanks/Like that only 8 people have ever disliked one of your posts and you've only disliked one post. So it's available to be seen, but doesn't affect your reputation.
This is what I believe anyway. If I'm wrong you can all give me bad rep!!
