I've had limited opportunities to watch the team so far this season , only Welling, Caley and Oxford, but I wonder what everyone's view is of our 4 signings. Gower: Seems to have added to the confusion about what our best midfield is. Interested to read Feeley's observation that the defense didn't pass to him when he made himself available. I noticed this last season too, especially from Solly. Wood: Seems a decent defender, but I'm not sure why our limited resources went on adding to a position where we already have 3 decent defenders, and Feely looking OK as back-up. Church:Looks like a good all-round forward, good addition to a position where we were desperately short. Sordell: only seen him for 10 minutes, so for me Church is the only big positive so far, although it's early days yet.
It's when we snap up the out of favour Rooney on season long loan But yeah I agree with you, excited by Church the others just nothing special, still dont know why we signed Gower, didn't rate him last season and still dodnt after seeing Boro game.
Gower: Wasnt overly impressed with him when he joined on loan last season... Havent been impressed with him so far yet either - Would have prefered had we signed someone younger or had we left the place free for Cousins. Wood: Agree with FHB on this one... Again we've enough youth in Feely / Cousins etc... to handle having three main Centre Backs, had one got injured then surely a dip into the loan market would be enough worst case scenario? Church: I like this guy... Like his willingness to run to cause the defence issues and to try and get on the end of things, a proper worker - Could end up being a clever signing. Sordell - Missed a great chance against Oxford, did nothing against Middlesbrough and even though he didnt get any service he didnt even try to work for the team
Gower: Solid but boring and pointless. Wood: Required after shipping Taylor out (Not sure why that happened though). Sordell: Like the ghost of BWP. Not a fan of loan players, but willing to give him more time before writing him off. Church: So far so good. As it's been said many times before, some creativity in the middle and things should come together. If Stephen's sticks around and stops sulking he could be the man to provide just that.
Hi Forest Hill Billy Thoughts on the new signings so far based on the pre season friendlies, and first two games; Gower. Legs gone. Not helping the momentum of the team with his constant sideways passing (like Stephens last season). Not the sort of player this team needs right now. Wood. Looked solid enough. Sordell. Can't be as bad as he showed last Saturday. Given he came from Bolton, is he really on less than Fuller? Church. Ditto Wood.
Gower: Didn't know why we signed him. Was not that impressive last season, and has not been that good this. I hate to admit this but Dale Stephens from the Oxford UTD and Middlebrough Match was far superior. Wood: Not seen enough of him playing to make a judgement. Seemed solid enough against Oxford UTD, but not sure how he'll play in a Championship match. Sordell: Has been lazy and lacking a lot. Saturday he didn't move or do anything. Church: Definitely needs to be starting. Far better than Sordell, and during the Oxford match, got into the right positions, got a couple of goals and was impressed by his performance. Against Middlesbrough, did more in 10 minutes than Sordell did the entire match. Pretty much the same against Bournemouth. Can be a good signing.
Sordell owes me bg time as I cheered him in in the face of others who know better. Church sounds like we may have netted a goodun if he sticks in there, Wood is another typical Charlton signing and Gower three quarters of the same.
Chris perry- what a player. I thought we were crazy to swap konch for him, but he turned out to be a brilliant signing. Always felt more confident when he started.
See him as someone similar to Chris Solly almost - Quite small in height (esp. for a Central Defender) yet damn he was good, rarely put a foot wrong
The concensus seems to be pro Wood and Church, Sordell must improve, Gower thumbs down.Funny that, considering Church and Wood aren't in the team, while Sordell and Gower came to Charlton because they weren't getting any action at their other clubs, and presumably expected to get in our team.
