Mauricio Pochettino: "I was at Wembley with my family and when Rickie scored we jumped out of our seats. After so many years cheering for Maradona and his hand of God goal it was very strange to be celebrating an England goal. Don't let them know in Argentina or they will tear my passport up."
Allardyce saying Carroll now has a fight on his hands and him and Lambert are going head-to-head for a place on the plane for the World Cup.
Decided to look back on this thread from the start of the match. A lot of pages but well worth it. Especially the reactions to the goal. Thanks to DTLW for all the pictures posted. I have never felt so much emotion from a goal since Le Gods last at the dell. So so happy for Rickie. As a fully functioning adult I never thought I'd have a footballing hero again, but Lambert is that hero.
Probably right. Rooney, Sturridge and Welbeck will go for sure. Defoe won't. It's between the two big lads for the last spot.
Going to the WBA game, hope the crowd join in on a "Rickie Lambert, we ****ing love you" It's no Wordsworth but
Quite possibly, gives Rickie a shot but downside is that Carroll will only need to do about 70% of what Rickie does to get the nod ahead of him. Long way to go though, first things first he's got to try and get a go in the qualifiers which will be tough enough anyway, best way to do that would be to bang in some goals for Saints!
I'd take Lambert over Rooney! I know that would never happen but actually, given the way Lambert plays, I think he is more in competition with Rooney than Carroll. Carroll would definitely be Plan B for me. For Allardyce to say that shows that he still doesn't understand how Lambert plays. That said I suspect the England management probably feel the same way.
Could it not be argued that some of the players for the poorer teams in our qualification group are league one standard at best. Rickie is a proven goal scorer against lower league, park the bus type teams. He offers something that none of our other forward players, including Carroll, offer. Shoe in for me, but I was advocating an England call up when we were in the championship.
England need Lambert not only because he is much better than the other options but that's the only way they'll ever get the best out of Rooney in internationals. Lambert leading the line with Rooney just behind
How bizarre. The regular guy who delivers us some food rang the bell and was dancing on the steps shouting "do do do do, Rickie Lambert!" Nutter. Quite surreal...
He talks occasionally about football, he said he was there and it made his evening to see Rickie score. He's a Southend fan.

Love these photos. You can just see how genuinely pleased Kelvin and Adam are for Ricky. Brings tears to me eyes.
