What a moment that must have been for Rickie Lambert, first touch and a goal for England, for a player thats come up from the bottom of the pile, to the pinnacle of English football, says a lot about the man, well done RL, lets hope there's a few more for you, you deserve it.
It was great to see someone who enjoyed playing for his country and was rewarded with a goal - storybook stuff However one word of warning - if he missed a chance like he did when we are 1-0 down to Ukraine with 5 minutes to go ........
Afternoon all. Seems to be universal delight for Rickie. Unusual for us bigoted football fans. He's a top bloke though even though he used to play for the other side.
Could not agree more AD, a fantastic moment for the ex-Rochdale & Bristol Rovers player, a tremendous goal, well done, Rickie Lambert!
difficult chance really which hit the post. slight deflection made it difficult. lambert had already got his foot in place in line where the ball was going. he had less than a second to adjust due to the slight deflection which is obviously no time at all. however he had a chance after which wasnt a great shoot and was a good chance. that i agree with but maybe as that happened straight after hitting the post, i guess adrenaline kicked in over the whole thing. i doubt he will get another call up though. hodgson has others ahead of him who will return from injury meaning no room for him again. thats my guess anyway.
Hes another player who got away from us as if I remember we once had a chance to buy him from Rovers and think it was Johnson who wouldnt pay a million for him as there was doubts whether he could step up to the championship and still continue his goal scoring record. Went to Southampton and showed he could. £1m would seem like a bargin now. Charlie Austin was another when he was at Swindon and may many years back we missed out on Grant holt as we wouldnt pay him enough money. To think where we could be if he had invested in any of these strikers
He only thanked Southampton in his interview Nah fair play to him, Takes a lot of skill and character to build his way up from the bottom to get in the prem and score his first England goal. If he keeps putting them in the back of the net for England then who gives a **** who he used to play for. Ex Bristol City man Gives an Ex Gas head his chance
Dont forget he was at the very dregs of football with Bristol Rovers, any man who can climb away from that bottomless pit deserves a bit of respect.!
****ing dunford dairies was tweeting last night 'he remembered when HE bought Rickie for £200,000', blah blah blah, I gave him a polite reply only for him to tweet back & mention about JPT from 7 years a go! typical has head of the blue few living in the past, I told him to move on...... next they'll be bragging about that big lump of lard sat on the bench last night, not Rickie but Mr Magoo, another rovers legend.........
A bloke in the pub starting singing "Irene" last night when he scored. How ****in embarassing.!! On about basking in reflected glory..
Don't let's forget Welbeck and Walcott, both scored as well as Lambert last night but well done Lambert scoring on his debut, Southampton influence has a lot to be proud of, Lambert, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott, well done that football team..
I don't rate Welbeck one bit but last night he had a very good game. However I would rather see OX Rooney Walcott upfront for the next game. Welbeck 9/10 doesn't do much. Also wilshere is ****ing quality, Ball sticks to his feet. Hope he has a injury free season this year, Will bode well for us at the WC with a on form Jack
Southampton may win us the WC As much praise has to go to Lambert, Rooney is a lot better and our best striker. Lambert will be a good player to have as another option but there is a massive problem going unrecognised at international level in the striking position for us at the moment and its there isn't ONE young English striker coming through who we could see as the next rooney/owen/shearer etc. Shame Lambert isn't 21 and not 31
I don't get this thing about age (well I wouldn't, would I ) Lambert's game isn't built around pace, as his critics have always been quick to point out. It's about positioning, incisive passing, still ball specialism, winning the ball in the air, shielding the ball; and lethal finishing with either foot. An oft used saying is 'If you're good enough you're old enough'. Well, that should apply at the other end of the scale too. I don't see why Lambert shouldn't be able to operate at his present level for another three or four years.
This bloke talks sense... http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/story-19663513-detail/story.html#axzz2blQJgyGn
