Another quiet day on the news front so how about this. If you could pick one player from Saints history to put in the current first team who would it be and why? MLT, Terry Paine, Big Ron, Channon or maybe a surprise selection. For me I think it would have to be a goalscorer and with Rickie and Jrod I think Steve Moran at his peak would be lethal.

Personally I've only experienced the last 12 years or so of Saints history, so can't pick out any past greats with real conviction, but if Terry Paine's crossing was all it was cracked up to be, we could bloody well do with him now! Although I dare say the first time he went to cross the ball he'd smash it twenty rows back on the opposite wing, would be some adjustments to be made...

Bale on current form. If I had to pick them based on their performances for Saints, then Le God, obviously.

The question is though who would be the best fit in the current side. We are all saying we are desperate for a goalscorer so world class player that Bales is would he be the best bet?

TP hardly ever "smashed" a cross Mikey, his method was the pinpoint chip on to the head of the striker, of whom he had a fair few to choose from in his time at the club. Considering our dearth of genuine wingers Terry Paine is a good call, as would be his opposite number John Sydenham, who was twice as quick as TP but could also bang a decent cross in unlike the late lamented Steve De Ridder. If you're looking at strikers (which I believe we are) though, despite my heart wanting to shout "Ron Davies" I would have to go for Southampton FC's record goalscorer Mr Michael Channon. He gets the nod (just) ahead of Matt Le Tissier, Ron Davies, and Terry Paine.

Bale is a goalscorer - look how many he scored last season.

I'd go for Niemi and Killer....cut the goals let in would also increase the points gained.

Niemi over Shilts Fran? Like the thinking though.

Le Tiss is exactly what we need at this time.

Can't see MLT fit into our current system. Would be great though to have an eighteen-yr-old Matty trained to our standard of fitness...wow!

Yep a MLT trying to prove he can play for England is what we need - he would make some, score some, but not get picked and stay fit for us then!

MLT could not play a pressing game. You had to accept his shortcomings. Not sure MP would!

I was not knocking Terry's technique, merely suggesting that even the deftest of pinpoint chips in the 60s with a modern ball would go looping into the crowd. ;)

Gaston Ramirez can't play a pressing game either.

I was close to going with Keegan HB. He and Rickie wiould have carved defences apart.
