I'm willing to go with the flawed genius theory (yeh I may be strecthing it) as I would love to have another striker, who is basically really good. Could be great having a bit of a spikey character to upset the opposition. I suppose the only downside is if (big if still) he ends up being the only cockwomble in the dressing room. That would be a bit ****.

I'd be happy to have Osvaldo but not frothing at the mouth to have him, he has ability no doubt but he hasn't convinced me. Probably because in the last four or five times I've watched him he's got more red cards than goals and has mostly looked disinterested and grumpy. If Poch believes he can get the best out of him though then I trust him.

If Poch and Osv get on then money presumably is the only stumbling block?

I'd think club stature is the only thing standing in the way. Osvaldo would certainly have to lower himself to come to us.

I suppose, Roma is a big club (who else did he play for excluding Espanyol?) but depends on his ego I guess, which to be fair sounds quite large. Now if he could turn that into a 'damn, I'll show the premier league what I can do' and is sold on the 'project' by Cortese and Poch, then maybe helping raise our stature will give him a buzz<whistle>

The conundrum he faces is, providing no other more befitting suitor enters the race, during a World Cup year, does he stay at a club where he is likely to be a bit-part player and be roundly hated by the fans, or does he take a risky move to a much smaller club where he will be out of the Italian spotlight but with a chance to flourish? Not an easy decision to make and probably why this has and will continue to drag on.

Why don't we just go with a simple option like Demba Ba. Good striker with all the right attributes, knows the prem & would cost less than half what's being quoted for Osvaldo/ Damiao.

Because he'd probably cost double in wages and there's no guarantee he'd want to step from Chelsea to Southampton.

He wants to find the right club perhaps. What's so wrong about wanting to get paid near to what he's getting now anyway?

Its it because many saints fans look fondly upon Billy that you don't like him? Can't recall you looking down your nose at him when he was scoring goals to get us promoted.

You're projecting quite a lot here, aren't you? I don't dislike Billy and I didn't say there was anything wrong with wanting to get paid similar to what he's getting now. However, if he wants to leave then he's going to need a paycut to do it, and we shouldn't bother keeping him because he's not good enough.

It is all up to Billy. He came here on a contract and did what was expected him...it's Saints that moved the goalposts.

So is Osvaldo a serious possibility now? Any credible sources? (I mean tancredi). I'd never heard of him but hey, he sounds good.

I am reading your repeated words, not hard to get the vibe of what you are feeling.

The club have made it clear they want to get shot, I expect he'll go before or on deadline day.

He never got the chance to prove whether he was good enough or not in the Prem. Still find it strange that he's given a 3 1/2 year contract by Cortese. Clearly not a mistake that eh?

Osvaldo seems reluctant to move...he probably has family/friends in Rome...he is on contract and doesn't have to. Don't suppose it helps that he heard his Chairman on an open telephone line saying how they would force him to go. That would make me sit out my contract as well.

Valid point, he has 3 kids with 2 mothers, neither of which he is with, meaning they almost definitely won't be moving to England with him. That's got to be a huge consideration for any father.

He's been put forward as a transfer target from the very first. My impression was that he didn't want to leave Italy to come to Southampton for the same reasons as the other players didn't want to leave their clubs. Not enough personal, and the club is not perceived as big enough. Don't think Don Cortese gets anywhere near setting up the DVD for these players. Of course, if one waves enough of the folding in front of them it's amazing how their own impressions can change. We'll see if Nicola waves enough this time round.

Agreed, indifference from Roma would be a better way to get the wheels moving. Being forced will just make him dig his feet in.

Could be a deal breaker! So what we need is a young fit free and single pacy forward!

It was NA that decided not to play Billy, and NA knew exactly what kind of player he and what are his limitations. I think he is a handy player to have on the bench, a total pain in the arse kind of player that if you give him a sniff then he will take it, how many times last season did we have he ball in the box and we just needed that little touch? He simply does not suit MP allround style of play, but niether does Mayuka
