I'll much rather have a keeper who is world class at reading the game, commanding his area, positional sense as all keepers can make Hollywood saves but it's the other aspects which set them apart. David James was a world class shot stopper on his day, but what was his nickname, calamity James! Shay Given used to put on world class shot stopping displays every week it seemed but no big club ever showed interest. So I'm pretty happy to have Lloris, even if at times you think he isn't that spectacular.
Not good, it seems. I think we need to get a back up keeper in. People who know me from last season, will know that I'm a massive fan of Hugo, and rate him very highly, far higher than Brad, and I'll leave it at that re the 'keeper debate'. He does need to up his game from pre-season though, and I trust that he will.
There was that one in one of the Europa games where he was falling to his right but stuck out an arm to the left and saved a point-blank header.
Tbf he got a massive chunk to a ball he should never have got near in the espanyol game, alas it still went in
Gomes - Made spectacular saves, ones he had no right to get too, but then would roll around on the floor (possibly) feigning injury. You just didnt know what he was going to do next, and this shows in the way the defense used to **** themselves when it was around him and Harrys reactions to his theatrics. Imo he should be on the bench. Friedel - Came in and did a job. Nothing spectacular, poor on crosses and marshelling his box. Never ever ever wanted to run out meaning far to often he was stuck to his goal line. made some pretty good saves though. Probably was at fault for as many goals as Gomes, just in a different way. Lloris - Agile, reads the game and plays the sweeper keeper to perfection. I think he will get better just like the utd keeper. From youtube you can see he has spectacular saves in him. Needs to get a full season under him though before we can really asses him against the other two who each had a good season as 1st choice.
Gomes theatrics? Not sure what you're on about. The main issue with Gomes was he would never win crosses or corners. I wouldn't mind the occasional howler if he dealt this those basics.
heres a few video's for people. Just to be clear, I think this guy has the potential to be the best keeper I have seen at Spurs (not hard growing up with Walker, Sullivan (ok), Fulop, Keller, Robbo (Englands no. 1) + Gomes) and I really hope that this guy stays and is appreciated. We've had a few World class players lately, but they have left too early imo - VDV, Modric and Berbs. - I hope we can hang on to this guy. Best and worst of Gomes: (Apologies for the poor quality of the 2nd vid)
Yeh I couldn't find any video's of it, but he used to go down very easily and generally look a bit silly. Pretty sure i'm not making this up, but can't find video evidence.

The amazing thing is that Gomes actually made so many more mistakes than just the ones that led to goals. And yet SO many led to goals - I'd actually forgotten how many. Sort of assumed that he couldn't have made as many mistakes as it seemed he did but I was wrong. That first video is horrendous and reminds me again how bloody brilliant it was when we signed Friedel. It added five years to my life-expectancy I reckon. I actually feel quite sorry for Gomes. Has one keeper ever made quite so many huge cock-ups in such a relatively short time? I really hope he can get his career back on track somewhere. He was loved at PSV and he could be a hero elsewhere too, I'm sure. Just not at Spurs. Ever again, thanks.
Gomes had that incredible season where he was key to us getting CL. He was mercilessly hammered by the media though, and in the end it seemed to get to him, or maybe it was his that mistakes got to him, I know not. Of the three Hugo, Brad, HG, to me Hugo is the best, by some distance. However, he does still need to step up a little more before I can feel he's as good as I thought he would be. He's still bloody good though. But I was hoping, he'd be our best since Big Pat, I don't think he's there yet though. I'd still rate Clemence above him so far, though Ray did lose it towards the end of his Spurs career, but alas that's life, etc.
Gomes was a big girls blouse, apart from that vid above, I distinctly remember an incident where he sat on the floor legs apart, holding his balls where he'd apparently copped one, waving between his legs, his mouthguard chattering away while whimpering to the ref who wasn't particularly interested. It was embarrassing.
What about Big Erik? He was a keeper and a half from what i remember. Just don't mention his daughter in these parts
