No Harry, the board run the club, this is their job. The fans are supporters and (in general) have lives, problems and interests outside of Celtic FC. No fan is obliged to spend money or attend games.
No way Harry you can't blame them, people need top be offered something for their money. If they feel they are not getting value they have the option to keep their money. I think people are getting a bit carried away with how much money we have right now. Turnover outwith the CL is probably down a fair bit with a lot invested in facilities at the stadium. This is something I expect to continue over the next 5 or so years, people are going to the football less often, so the idea is to have them in the stadium and the area around the stadium longer and squeeze more out of them while they are there.
Aye but no **** is going to want to spend any time hanging about Celtic Park when half the team are diddies no-one has heard of or loan signings from pishy English teams. Celtic Board: Here assorted Celtic fans, get the weans faces painted, have a bistro style meal and drink in our new bar while checking your email via WiFi. Assorted Celtic Fans: Get tae ****.
I can understand the disappointment at having sold three of our top performers and seemingly no sign of adequate replacements as yet - and if we don't get through to the last 16 of the Champions League this disappointment will be heightened. However, maybe we're being a little too hasty here in expecting more money than usual to be spent on replacements - after all, the three players we sold were bought for a song thanks to the scouting system. Bigger money players will probably be looking for bigger wages than the club are prepared to pay and therein lies the difficulty. I think I'll stick with whatever it is that the club are planning at the moment and keep faith that the scouting system will continue to turn up relatively inexpensive players who will eventually pay dividends both on the pitch and in financial terms when/if sold on.
If people expect this to happen again they need a reality check! I think people are just expecting us to compete in the CL 3rd place is a bonus and last 16 is the stuff of dreams.
Cant always rely on finding hidden gems tho ... I'm not saying Celtic need to through away money, just once in a while "splash the cash" and buy more than just a prospect. Also, this Icelandic striker is only 24 ...still has his best years left and, if he continues in teh same form, will have sell on value. We'll wait and see...much like the Celtic board!
I didn't say anyone expected us to get through to the last 16 - don't think anyone did last time either. No harm in hoping though ... isn't that part of the thrill of being a fan? Who knows, some gems might be discovered for little or nothing and against all the odds ...
'Splashing the cash' would probably result in difficulties with the wage structure and we all know where that can lead. I don't see why finding new talent should be that difficult if the scouting system is good enough ... that's where I'd invest if it isn't but so far it's proved excellent!
As a one off...dont see why. Ok, maybe if they want £40 to £50k but I cant see this guy being on anywhere near that... I could be wrong. I would say Celtic have done well, but not all signings have been a massive success.
Not one person on this thread has mentioned breaking wage structures in order to sign players. Too many people on here seem equate ambition with money. The players we've been linked with up front (outside of Finnbogason) have rank rotten goal scoring records and are not good enough for Celtic. Most would like to see another Hooper style signing, not a bank buster, but someone with talent and a good recent record. Not players who once played in the English Premier League a few years ago.
FFS Pud, within one post I'm contradicted on my "Not one person on this thread has mentioned breaking wage structures"..... Dick.
I find it embarrassing when we are happy to make up the numbers in the Group stages, we should be doing something to try and build a team that can compete at that level. This is not the Celtic philosophy I was brought up on, and I realize that we just cant compete with the best in Europe because of money and our ****ty league but as the great man said when asked where do we go from here after winning everything in 67, "we will do what we done last year, continue to do our very best to improve the standard of play in the team" and something about competing with the best in Europe, Lionhearts has disappeared from the internet and my vhs player has finally packed it in so I cant get the exact quote. But the point is, we are not doing our best to improve the standard of the team and everyone can see that.
What wi-fi after 4 home games , there is not sign of it working . Celtic are never going to attract the top market players you lot want , the spl is poor and is regarded as one the worst throughout Europe , when we signed Hooper I remember the remarks , where 's the ambition signing someone from Scunthorpe
Hooper had a phenomenal scoring record when he arrived though Harry. I totally agree on the level of players that Celtic can attract. I worry that the club is now looking for value rather than talent. Whereas Hooper had talent and value.
