It is my opinion that potentially better players than Gomelt were released yet he was kept on. I don't particularly rate him, but he has had some injuries and as I say, his work permit issues preyed on his mind, so the coaches are happy to give him the benefit of the doubt and persevere with him.

First off, I'm well pleased the game is on a Sunday, with internationals being played on a Wednesday, the extra day could be crucial. I nearly had a fit when I thought Brazil were playing in Brazil this week, but it's actually Basle which is fine for getting Paulinho back in time and ready to play.

Looking at yesterday, my first go at the team for Sunday is

Hugo, KW Daws Kab Rose, Paul Dem, Len Siggy Chad, Bob

Not the best of teams in the Prem, and one that would struggle to make one of the top 4. Put JV in for Rose and Bale for Len/Chad/Siggy and that is a 'top 4 team' I believe. Of course it's all about the squad, and add Bale Capoue Ade and JV to the squad that played yesterday, and that looks top 4. Add Contreau or another LB as well, and then I'd be confident of top 4.

is that the left back you admitted you have never seen play? maybe you missed you're calling as a scout ;)

anyhow as for the game, should be routine as palace have struggled to strengthen and their back four struggled to keep clean sheets in the championship so ideal game for bobby and paulinho to bed in and grab some goals.

It's nice to know that our preparation for the opening game of the season will be disrupted by a round of utterly pointless friendlies.
What genius chose this week for the schedule?

On the other hand, our players are lacking match fitness. 45 minutes of an international could do them some good?

I'm delighted that in defence Daws, Kab and Rose aren't involved in the friendlies, as we have very little cover for them. I wonder if JV will play for Belgium? 45 mins or more against France would be a good indicator he could play against Palace.

He surely can't, he's very unlikely to be fit for the Palace game already.

Some numpty at Palace forgot to lay the turf on time, so it might not have bedded in by the time we play them.

So place your bets, which player gets injured on it?

You may be right WY, I don't know even if JV is in their squad, but I think he is.

We'll see what happens. My understanding is that he was 'touch and go'for Palace so that would indicate he would be training this week sometime. If he can train with the Belgians, maybe he can play a little for them too in a friendly, we'll see.

Vertonghen's in the Belgian squad. The other PL players in there are Mignolet, Kompany, Dembele, Fellaini, Hazard, Chadli, De Bruyne, Mirallas, Lukaku, Benteke and Courtois (sort of).
    Alderweireld is also in there.

<yikes> That's got to be a record for number of players playing in the same league, which isn't their own.

Van Buyten has played for City, Van Damme was at Southampton and Wolves and Vermaelen's injured, too.

Cheers for info PNP, so IF JV plays for Belgium, he must have a good chance to play for us.

I understand that ticket requests for this fixture, was the most requested by Spurs fans for any away game over the past 4 years.

They've got some squad. Surely they should be better than they are?

he's like a dried on skid stuck on the toilet bowl. Man Utd can get rid of referees they don't like, why can't we?
