They need to go on the BBC website and look up the rankings for top scoring prem players. Top scoring English striker? Case closed.

I hope he gets enough time and doesn't just get ignored again if he doesn't score. As I side note do you think the call up will spur SRL on for next season? I'm sure he will want to continue to prove himself.

Roy Hodgson says he considered Rickie for Fulham when he was at Rovers, but decided it was a risk as he was 25 years old and had only played at league 1 level. He continued saying that others took the chance on him and he hadn't let those teams down. We should be grateful for his blindness to true class.

That seems a pretty bizarre (not to mention disrespectful) thing to say considering he was interested in signing him then and has now picked him for the England squad.

It seems fairly safe to assume they ended up taking Zamora instead, and considering the success he had at Fulham you can hardly say they made the wrong choice.

Not so much bizarre as humorous. Should have added a smiley. :)

That sums it up for me. I have kind of given up watching England recently because it seems that most of the players look like playing for England is an inconvenience. For me Rooney is a perfect example of this.

Whatever Rickie does, he'll wear the shirt with pride and give 150%. Like it should be!

You haven't been watching Rooney properly then. Most games he is so desperate to get the ball he ends up in midfield because he is disgusted with the rest of the team

Rooney is the best and most committed player England has right now.

Agreed, for all Rooney's obvious personality flaws, his passion for playing for England isn't one of them.

A Rooney / Lambert partnership would be very good in my eyes.

Most committed maybe, but even when he is good, which seems increasingly rare especially for England, that is often to the detriment of the team effort.

The only real commitment I've seen for England, where a player seems to put in all their effort and a performance that comes close to resembling their club performance, was from; A Cole, Beckham and Gerrard. Rooney is **** for England. We were better in the last competition in the first two games where he was suspended. I don't know how I feel about the Rickie call up.

That is pretty much exactly how I feel. That, and a lot of love.

It's not even just my crippling saints bias when I say that he should start ahead of Defoe and Welbeck.

If Rooney is fit enough for 90, i don't think rickie will get on the pitch. However if he isn't fit then, Lambert should definitely replace him as 'first reserve'.

Lambert is England's best attacker. Been saying this for nearly 2 years now. He would have been selected when we were in the Championship if I was the manager. It's amazing it's taken this long for him to get called up.

Hargreaves did as well. His performance against Portugal (2006 world cup) was one of the best I've ever seen for England. We were playing for over an hour with 10 men and Hargreaves ran himself into the ground and scored his penalty. He managed to out pace Ronaldo deep into extra time. You'd have put Lampard in there too if you think Gerrard has been good enough.

That photo brings back so many league one memories! I remember how my gashead mates were obsessed with him, and they haven't let me forget about how we nicked him, or when they beat us 3-2 at St Mary's with a last minute screamer from Williams. 1-5 and 0-4 at the memorial is all I need to say to shut them up though!

I was never a fan of that kit. The sponsor background stopping before the end of the red stripes always annoyed me, and those shoulder bits are horrible. Away kit that year was amazing, though.
