http://www.examiner.co.uk/huddersfi...et-to-leave-huddersfield-town-86081-28812280/ Faz must know both of these from Huddersfield so they are known quantities to the club. They are not the big name signings people are expecting. Is this a bad thing?
I would have Peltier as a squad player at first. I think we can get better them Smithes. What about Marton Fulop. He was class when he was on loan here
This fixation with big name signing is harming our chances of progressing in THIS league - For a team to be successful in this league they need the right type of player and that is not a big name Charlie in free-fall from the Premier League - So I for one am pleased to see we are looking elsewhere and very much hope they are made out of the right stuff if we sign them
I would be surprised if Sven bought anyone from a lower league given his brief to get us promoted this year. It would just be too much of a risk. I think he will go for tried and trusted players from the higher leagues in England or outside who can hit the ground running.
Well, we have been linked with quite a few players in lower leagues so I don't think the management team would be ruling it out. Personally, if these 'big name players' are willing to play for us and are commited to doing a job in the Championship then by all means sign them. However, there are good players in the lower leagues if you know where to look - and I think Fazackerley knows where to look. Peltier is a good player; I'd definately take him. I agree with Proud that we can do better than Smithies. Given I don't think would drop down a division and there are probably 19 other Premier League clubs who would take him. Westwood is apparently our number 1 choice for a goalkeeper and rightly so - we should do all we can to get him. Incidentally, does anyone know what happened to Paul Bignot. He was a right-back and a non-league player who came on trial with us and apparently did very well and his signing was imminent - but it's all gone quiet.
I have to admit I actually know very little about Westwood. However, a good pointer is that I've never seen him make a mistake (having watched the Football League Show all season as well as 3 or 4 of Coventry's games). I always thought this was what made Buffon so great, he was extremely reliable and hardly ever made a mistake. And of course, he pulled off a worldy every now and again. The main reason I'd pick him over Schmeichel is that I have seen Kasper make a few mistakes, and I also wonder whether he's made his name because of his father. He was also playing in League 2 before last season Anyway, I', not bothered about a players 'name', as we saw even this season, Kyle Naughton wasn't a famous name but he was absolutely brilliant for us. Under Martin O'Neill, we plucked players from Crewe etc and they made their own name with us, which is much better than getting someone who flops and who's name will always be associated with another Club, not ours. Norwich have used a bunch of 'nobodies' this season and have played some lovely football and deserved to go up. If Sven thinks Peltier and Smithies are good enough then by all means give them a chance. In fact I'd be encouraged by the idea of Sven not ignoring talent from the lower leagues. with regards to players 'hitting the ground running', I actually think you could look at it another way - players from lower leagues will be eager to prove themselves at a higher level and the momentum they might have from a successful previous season could benefit them when they move on to a new Club. What you want is hungry players who need to be sucessful for their careers. The quality and attitude of the players is what's important, not their names.
Doesnt Peltier have a disciplinary problem ? Smithies has been injured a lot. Happy to take lower league players if they are going to be for the future or add something immediately. Am sure that Faz knows them inside out. Players we have taken from lower league in the past include Neil Lennon, Alan Smith and Frank Worthington (also from Huddersfield). They seemed to do OK from what I remember.
Of recent times we have taken Matty Fryatt, Iain Hume, Michael Morrison, Gareth McAuley and Lloyd Dyer from lower leagues and they all held their own in this league
I have to admit I actually know very little about Westwood He cost us 4 points this season and 2 the previous season in my opinion !
Well...Ricardo Take the point about Westwood though, we have dominated every game in the last 2 seasons between us and Coventry and only picked up 4 points from 12 - he must be doing something right.
I appreciate that he would like to fight for a place in a prem first team, but we would have let him play every game! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13639513.stm
My mates are always banging on about Smithies on Football Manager 2011 and he becomes a really good keeper...
It looks like both Given and Westwood are still possible. http://twitter.com/#!/robtannermerc I think Westwood is more likely as he might come to Leicester for first team football and the fact he won't have to move house. In the Mercury it says Given will think about moving to Leicester but it is a long shot. I am torn. I like the idea of Given because he is experienced at the highest level but Westwood has more potential to be a great goalkeeper for years to come. What do you think?
I would take either of them. Both could see themselves going to Prem Clubs though. I know what you mean Stourbride, it's a tough one - we know what Given's all about but for how long will he be able to play at the top of his game at his age?
I think Given must have a couple of years left in him. But Westwood has over a decade in him and a big transfer fee if he leaves.
