If you're a fan - have a look at the new issue of UNCUT. A good article - but the best thing in there is that Universal are putting together the 'definitive box-set', for issue later this year/early next! Unreleased tracks!
Good group with so much tragedy later on, and when they first appeared it did seem they had small faces, oh and Rod Stewart more or less started with them.
Rodney Modney started with Long John Baldry & co in this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Steampacket .....but you're fairly right - that was when Rod started to be noticed.
The Small Faces were brilliant, particularly Steve Marriott, who I don't think got the recognition he deserved until fairly recently. I wasn't so much a fan of the Faces, but there's a new line-up going on tour soon too(I'm doing a bit of work with Universal at the moment), with Mick Hucknall singing, Ronnie Wood is still on guitar and Glen Matlock(Pistols) on bass.
Steve Marriott, an absolute legend a gentleman, saw him play the Duchess of York in leeds doing his blues stuff had time to talk to the fans and was so humble it was unreal, sadly missed.
Not clever I know, particularly as Kelly Jones(Stereophonics) offered to do it and would have been far better.
Sorry, but they're taking the piss, thats not the faces, it can't be without Rod, Ronnie Laine Kenney and Ian Mac, a truly great rock band, and mick hucknalls a twat.
Still - good for you.....! The ginge can sing, but what a twat - and anyone would have to step right up to the bar to do Stevie justice. Do me a favour and, if you get any details of the box-set, post it or PM me? Can't wait for it. I saw 'em at the old (Co-op) Skyline Ballroom, at a Tech College dance....must've been '66-'67. To get to the stage, they had to walk through the crowd and you couldn't see 'em - they were so tiny!
I'll let you know when it's out, I'm doing some work with Trojan Records at the moment(a division of Universal), they've got some amazing stuff in their back catalogue.
Ska stuff? On the Small Faces pitch, Paul Rodgers might've been good for it. What do you think? (And thanks, by the way)
They've got loads of classic Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Dub and even some early Mento stuff. Rodgers could certainly have done a job, but as it's not really the Faces, I'd rather they'd gone completely modern and used Jones.
As far as I know they don't own Blue Beat, or any of their old recordings, but I do know Buster Bloodvessel quite well, he relaunched the label a while back, but had no rights to any of the back catalogue.
