I like the heart Jonas shows, evne if his powers are fading. Let's hope he has a decent season as he will be playing quite a bit I reckon....

JONAS Gutierrez has the legs for the hard yards ahead of him this season.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew felt Gutierrez had his best pre-season game yet on Tuesday night, when the club drew 1-1 with Rangers.

He believed Gutierrez was more like his energetic “old self” at Ibrox, where he threatened down the left flank, and created an isolated Papiss Demba Cisse’s only real chance.

Up to the Rangers match, the former Argentina international had struggled to make an impression on United’s friendly opponents.

Pardew’s confident Gutierrez’s fitness is now at the required level.

“I thought Jonas played very well,” Pardew told the Gazette. “He was more like his old self.

“He was much more positive, and he is at a better physical level. I was pleased with him.”

Newcastle’s players – who have been put through an intensive pre-season – were worked hard in the run-up to the game, and there was “fatigue” in some players’ legs at Ibrox, according to Pardew.

United weren’t at their best – the team created few clearcut chances – but the squad’s efforts on the training field over the past week have heartened Pardew ahead of the new season.

“I was pleased with most of the team, because they were playing under fatigue,” added Pardew.

“It is difficult to judge if you were looking at them just on the Rangers performance, but looking at them over the last few days, they’ve worked so hard.”

Pardew’s staff are assessing the groin strain suffered by captain Fabricio Coloccini against Rangers.

Everyone likes a trier. Especially Pardew. I just don't want a second rate player picked because of his 'heart' ahead of talent that can create or score more.

What does anyone think to the idea of Santon and Jonas swapping positions?

The issue we have is that if we play attacking full backs together with Debuchey and Santon then we need midfielders who either stay back for cover (ala Tiote) or players who can get back and forth like a duracell bunny (ala Jonas), do we think that Cabaye and Sissoko could do either of these two roles? If not then it has to be Tiote and Jonas/Anita (personally I would play Anita) so I can see why Pardew would pick Jonas when playing two attacking full backs

I've been a big fan of Jonas and I think he's been a good servant to the Club, but I'm afraid he's had his day.

Let him move to a lower level if he wants to continue playing but I can't see a Premiership club wanting him.

Good news. A cracking player when on top form. Was shocking last season, but not alone in that regard. Hopefully he is back to his best as he is a very useful option to have, particularly when you play such attacking full backs. Most of his good performances came against the top sides last season, Chelsea, Man U. That is when he should be used, when we are up against it. Pardew will have to learn to use him more sparingly, otherwise he will just become the scapegoat again.

Jonas will definitely play a part if he is fit, that seems certain.

I don't think he will start every game and it will depend on the way we play.
I can see him starting against Man City in a defensively minded team.

If his legs have gone he has less if very little benefit to the team, particularly going forward, so, not so sure he will start at home against the likes of West Ham if we go out more attack minded.

I just don't see this season going well for Pardew. I just have this feeling old favourites will get picked, then what will follow will be the murmurs of discontent from MYM (Saylor picked continuously), Gouffran/Marv (Jonas constantly picked) before then dissenting voices of a senior figure like Cabaye, who won't be happy when Pardew starts to get desperate and fannies around with all and sundry out of position....except Jonas!!!

To be fair MYM has to dislodge Saylor. He has an already well established solid partnership with Colo. Cabaye needs to actually turn up, a lot of his issues last year were down to himself not fancying it. Marveaux needs to show he isn't having an affair with Derek Wright. There is room for Jonas,he just needs to be used like Ji Sung Park was by SAF, pick particular games.

I can see a good season. It'll be better though if the fans actually get behind the team

Hey, I'm not exactly a PFA member - I hate it once the dissent kicks in, only ends one way and it's not pretty.

I'd love to feel positive, but it's just games like Rangers - completely agree with you that it matters not one jot what the results look like in pre-season, more that the common theme was the same. We seemed to play the same way, same defensive lapses, same cluelessness in the final third and - worst of all - the same, tired comments from the manager about needing firepower. Firepower we've needed since Ba left on the 5th January!!

What you normally expect to see is something positive, like "Sissoko seemed to be much more comfortable in the deeper lying midfield role" or "Ben Arfa enjoyed the freedom of not being on the right of midfield". But what do we get? "Jonas is in good form" followed by an admittance that he's been crap for some time. I don't know - something about the manager just doesn't sit very well with me, nor dare I say quite a few others. It's tough to call - the best course is to support from the first whistle and give it at least 6 games if not more. The problem we have you've already pinpointed. This Summer has done little if anything to dispel the general malaise. In fact, we've gone backwards. Another few helpings of "we need more firepower", particularly if these comments are still there on the 3rd September, and it'll be a bloody mutiny!

We do need more firepower and I can understand him wanting to apply pressure because it is likely JK/Ashley are sitting thinking "Remy in, job done, for only 2m". I'd keep repeating it while it looked likely I may have to play Shola at some stage. Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased to get Remy but we still need another attacking player with physical presence (Gomis). We could also do with someone deeper lying too (Ince). Yes that is greedy but if I was a manager I'd want options.

I think we have shown good and bad signs this pre season. You always look a little fragile in defence, as a manager you have to chop and change, get everyone game time. It is really the work on the training ground pre season and in match prep which will dictate how we defend. The positive for me is the players seemed to have freed themselves of the intense pressure and are playing football, there have been signs he has them looking to retain possession and play passing football.

I'd hope fans give it more than 6 games but I honestly feel his goose is cooked. I know our fanbase well enough to know it doesn't take long for discontent to spread. I have mates who hate the bloke and openly admit that if we don't beat West Ham he'll have to go. That's crazy talk to me.

What's your threshold, then? Where does it become untenable for you? I don't know of one fan who is either aiming for nor expecting much better than 8th. The majority are looking a couple of places further down. When does it become too apparent he's not up to it, or is your reluctance partly fuelled by the likely alternative being Kinnear?

Look Pards i'm not changing my ****ing username again so either you're wrong or gutes is gerrin kneecapped!!
Seriously though it's just the same recycled bollocks we were hearing end of last season, christ we've even had cabs coming out and saying how hard we bin training again. Just gives this whole aura that feels like we're still in the same mess we finished in last season, we deserve to expect better than that again.

Ideally I like to give managers a full season. Simply because I don't like chopping and changing during seasons, you get a better class of managerial options in the close season, and I'm pretty patient. However I think if you get to Xmas and we're languishing, he hasn't managed to get us back to playing football properly, and the fans are restless then you may have too change. I honestly don't think we'll get that far. I think the discontent will be there from game one, and Ashley was also unhappy at the end of last season. Just the way of the modern game suggests he is a very short leash.

The thought of JK is frightening but I've pretty much accepted its coming.
