Obviously not (though how many goals has Bony scored in English football?). For every Suarez or Van Persie there are several Afonso Alveses, Dirk Kuyts and so on, who fail to replicate their scoring record elsewhere.

Irrespective of how kosher the stories are, I think the rumours around Doumbia, Sow and Finnbogason just goes to show there are plenty of alternatives out there. Having said that Damiao is the most exciting name touted around this summer and yes there is a similarity with the quotes from Wanyama's agent so all is not lost.

Actually, I think it would be quite reasonable for him to turn us down because we do not have a great track record at the top level. We're not a top six side and we are not Champions League material. But to dismiss us because we don't have ambition is ludicrous. That's the one thing we have in spades!

You have to bear in mind that these things can be lost in translation a little bit. He could have meant more ambitious from their point of view, i.e. it would be more ambitious of Damiao to join a bigger club. I don't blame him at all, he wants to play in the world cup in Brazil, and his chances of doing so are probably better served by staying in Brazil than by moving abroad, unless it's to a massive club where he will continue to have a high profile in Brazil.

I'd be fairly happy to take a punt on this Icelandic chap at the price mentioned. Very good goal scoring record at every level. I know the Dutch league isn't that strong, but it isn't the Blue Square either, he's clearly not a donkey.

"Southampton have joined Everton as the frontrunners to land the signature of Iceland striker Alfred Finnbogason."

I'd like to see what chant we come up with for him!

Just go for the conga tune. "Do do doo, Alfred Finnbogason". Simple and unoriginal, the perfect Southampton song.

If we've failed to sign any of our bigger targets, then I think a cheap signing like this would be the right way to go.

Seems Celtic are after Fingermouse as well. Another magnificent way to really upset them this season......

Could be nothing but thought it was worth a mention, Fenerbache have re-signed Emenike so could potentially mean that Sow is moving

That's a fair point. There's plenty of evidence of poor translations this summer. Howeber, I think his profile woould be better with us where he is likely to 'stand out' a bit more than with someone like Liverpool or Naples

Or look at it the other way, what happens if he moves to Europe and fails to deliver? Better playing for a big team playing poorly than a smaller one. Basically if he moves to us he will have to prove himself in the PL to then get a move to a bigger club, if he stays in Brazil (in a league where he is already proven) and has a decent World Cup then he will get a big move.

By not moving to us he is saving himself a step
