I understand his claim, however Mcdonalds has been running for many many years and I don't recall too many manslaughter charges being brought against them!
That's very true about insects, in Asia and Africa they are considered an important and easy source of protein. You can get them from places like stands on the roadside to high end restaurants. The UK press have just picked up on this, been a lot of articles on insects as the future go-to protein source, along with this synthetic Frankenstein burger they've just created. To most Brits the idea of eating insects is appalling at the most and unpalatable at the least, but it's a cultural perspective and attitudes can be changed. It's similar to how we look down in the west on eating certain other meat that isn't a traditional 'pastorally/farm reared' animal. And yes, rearing cattle for meat is one of the most polluting activities we humans have introduced, from the gases produced by the animals to the cutting down of hectares of rainforest to provide room for cattle to provide cheap meat to the fast food industry. Personally I think we're too far removed from the source of our food, especially with the hyper industrialisation and mechanisation of the meat industry. When you pick up that pristine chicken breast or rump steak in the cling film and foam packaging in the supermarket, with the little sprig of herbs on top, it's almost like a disguise to hide the unpleasant and distasteful process that has brought the item to your plate that noone really wants to think about. Rant over.
Now dude, you are making silly contrary comments, it takes years of exposure to small doses of toxins to eventually cause a health condition, you are using the same argument the smoking companies use Proving it is a different matter, and when being informed you have a choice, my main issue is the deception by McDonalds. Ammonia is factually scientifically proven toxic to most animals and certainly humans, it's expelled as waste.
I'm pro choice myself but with caveats, and it's a what point does the aggressive capitalism of companies like McDonalds take that choice out of consumers hands and become irresponsible. The main caveat is that a lot of people in this country don't seem to know how much is too much when it comes to drink, ***s, fast food. I think if you're eating McDonalds a couple of times a week at most with a balanced lifestyle/diet, that's probably fine, but for people who eat it continually to the point where it seriously negatively impacts on their health and in a country where we have an NHS (this goes for drinking and smoking too) the individuals and the companies then need to be checked in some way.
I think your making contrary comments there! If its small doses of toxins over several years then I repeat, why has there never been a manslaughter charge brought against McDoanlds? they have been operating for donkeys years!
I see it like this. If McDonalds were clear in what they put into food and how they made it, people then have an informed choice to make. Just like cigarettes back in the day, now, anyone who smokes have only their self to blame, but decades ago, the cigarette companies clearly put out a product no one knew would give you cancer, or have you need bypass operations. They were to blame. Same goes for McDonalds, they are making food with long term health impacts and not providing the information to decide if you want to be slowly poisoned. Fair play to Oliver, his actions may in fact prevent millions of health disorders in 30 40 years time by shaming McDonalds into using ingredients not fit for human consumption. As for the obesity aspect, moderation in all aspects of life applies, too much of anything is bad by definition, "too much"
That's pretty much what In said with my original comment I just don't think one person has the right to stop millions of others making a choice.
But he ain't, you can take it or leave it, he's not standing in McDonalds with a baseball bat waiting for you to order nuggets. he informed people that poison was used to make non edible food edible, now people can still choose to eat that but McDonalds chose to remove it, McDonalds removed the choice to eat poison by removing it from the menu, not Oliver, Oliver just informed people it is there, McDonalds did not. I think the fast food franchise is the one totally in the wrong in this case
Okay, I may have misread it here then (quite possibly since I only scan read it). I thought the article was about him winning a case against McDonalds which had forced their hand into changing it. If McDonalds have taken the decision themselves then that is different, Oliver still applied the pressure though.
McDonalds need calling on that - assuming that it's fact & they need to change that practice immediately, as if it's not acceptable in our country why should it be in a developing one? It's nothing more than profiteering at the potential expense of human health. As for peoples attitudes towards the food itself, I thought the film 'Super Size me' would have a dramatic effect on peoples lifestyle choices around fast food, but it didn't make a jot of difference. (If you've not watched it, do, as it's funny as well as horrendous)
I remember a show on Channel 4, a guy went and bought pies, and then looked at the ingredients, he then went to a butchers and spoke with one, who showed what was actually in the pie, the stuff he throws into the bin. The presenter then made pies with those ingredients, packaged and labelled them and sold them back to the place as a new line of pies posing as a small business, the place was called Bookers. They accepted his product and put it on the shelves, he then contacted them and told them what he used to make it and that they had other products same as which they also removed after he contacted them and told them he worked for BBC. He also mentioned bangers as opposed to sausages, law says a sausage must be a certain % meat, a banger can have old shoe soles in it, not covered by law, do not eat anything labelled bangers folks
Yeah people invariable make bad choices when the impacts are years off, enjoy now pay later, similar to credit, call it health credit if you will Yeah seen the Super size me, goes to show, being informed doesn't mean you will choose the healthy option. I'm currently running my own brainwashing program with my two youngest, fruit is easy, the veg is a struggle
I don't know which Maccy Ds you go in but it took me about half a mile to shake him off my tail yesterday, had to throw my happy meal away to be able to run faster too.
That's a good point and backs up what i am saying (no idea if this is what you meant though?). It is peoples choice what they eat. That super size me documentary was shocking, it really highlighted how unhealthy McDoanlds (possibly other fast food establishments too) is for the human body. However, despite people knowing this, they still eat it (including me). Not everyone gives a **** about healthy living. People are aware that smoking kills (much worse than this topic does) but you still see people smoking regardless. Hell, I know someone that was told they would die within two years if they didn't quit, that person has five kids and all bar one of them were under sixteen at the time, she didn't quit and had no intention of doing because she wasn't bothered (whether that is morally right or not is another matter). She is still alive and its about twelve years later, she still smokes but has cut down and sticks to menthols (only in the last couple of years though and through cost rather than health). My point is, not all people want to be in prime condition. I'm not exactly in the best of shape (about two stone over what I should be) and my fitness is appalling, but I have not intention of doing anything about it because I like my food and beer!
Haha, sorry just that I know Americans who have categorically defended their steaks. I like those quorn bangers.
Fair enough for adults, but people feed their children on this crap - people are aware that it's not good for you as its burgers and chips but McDonalds are taking it to a new level that not everyone will be aware of. Children just eat what's put in front of them without knowledge of what's bad about it so I think it definitely needed highlighting to people, surprised they actually changed the recipe though.
Problem was they were not telling us what crap they are serving people JO thought it was terrible that they are serving amonia soaked meat and decided to do something about it. Good on him IMO.
