Attacking players score more than defence, as long as they're not getting thrashed 6-0 every week a mediocre defence with a great forward line playing a 3-4-3 formation gets the most points. My defence is: Marshall \ Boruc Clyne \ Turner \ Collins \ Coleman \ Cole My first sub after GW1 is Cole -> Mertersacker or Koscielny. After that I'll have two ok defenders (Coleman being the other) rotating with a cheap defender depending on who has the best fixture. Same for the Keepers - by doing that as well as Bale (if he stays) & RvP I'll get Walcott in my team by Gameweek 3 (sub for Lampard). Between them, they'll score far more points than I'll lose in defence, specially when captained.
Paid a fiver to get into my work league - not many take it that serious so just a little reading on tactics etc. will get me into the top 3, and hence actual prize money. I'm not actually very good, my brother always gets a few hundred points than me.
I know it is not completely random and lucky, you can certainly optimise your point scoring if you mix your team around, however some things are pure luck such as guessing who exactly a manager will select, or who will get bonus points -it can be about picking popular names rather than knowing the ins and outs of the lesser known players. One thing I detest is bonus points which invariably go to the same players. One guy in my league last year got nearly a third of his points from merely having van Persie as his captain. Let's see how we get on this year .
That is the down side of being in the Premiership: less games to fill August and the midweeks with, especially as we didn't have a cup run last year - too many free weekends. When we were in league one and were doing well in the JPT we seemed to play every other day! Good luck with the Fantasy Football, I was jesting when I said it was pure luck, however there is an element of it. My excuse is that I am a scientist therefore I should not know anything about football...
I've been meaning to set a team up for a while. I know I, like everybody else, forget about it after a few weeks, but setting a team is always fun.
I like to go a bit obscure, just for that one glorious week where they all randomly score hat tricks and I top the rankings. Never happens obviously. To be fair I'm not a huge fan of how it works, in the days of a million different Opta stats we can surely be a bit more subtle about rewarding defensive midfielders and full backs instead of just the players whose no hope passes luckily turn into assists.
Brought Rodriguez in today. Had Cornelius in but he is a doubt so hopefully Jay will do the business!
I have finally managed to find a site that does fantasy football in an interesting way. There is no budget or limits on players from clubs etc, it is purely done as a draft, so every team is unique as there is only 1 RVP, Mata, Suarez etc in the league. Find the traditional way boring as invariably after about the 6th week a lot of the teams are very similar
Mignolet Riether/Vidic/Baines Yaya/Kagawa/Wanyama/Gaston Altidore/RVP/Benteke Bench: Boruc, Canas, Baker, Ashley Williams. Didn't notice the trend in my midfield until after the team was created.
Which is why I don't normally bother. The Yahoo Fantasy Premier League is a lot better for giving player points for passes, blocked tackles, dribbles, interceptions, etc, etc
And it's great because all imported players start with the base salary, no matter who they are...Wanyama, Paulinho, Schurrle, Jovetic, all cheaper than Bendtner.
Yes, that too. No restriction on weekly changes except your budget and player value; so one team has two matches that week you can load up with their players, if you so wish
I have to say I don't quite get that, I looked into it as it sound interesting but when I was quickly scrolling through the players and noticed that Negredo and Jovetic cost the exact same amount as Lee Barnard, I was out of there!
They change rapidly based on player performance from stats on the EPL. It is much more interesting and flexible, allowing more gambles that can be changed back on a week to week basis.
Makes it a bit easier though surely? In the official Barclay's one you can only change so much at a time so every mistake you make is punished and you have to plan ahead to really maximise your point-scoring. In the Yahoo one however although I like the deeper point-scoring you can just load up on new transfers on the cheap whilst also being able to change out any and as many as you want. For instance I just knocked together a team in about a minute that included the likes of Paulinho, Navas, Fer, Holtby, Bale, Negredo, Van Persie and Suarez without skimping on defenders or subs with cap to spare, I quickly put it together on the official one and I was £22.5m over a £100m cap! I can understand why people would like it, particularly the point-scoring system, but just seems to take less planning and nous which makes it less interesting for me.
Well actually I think it takes more planning and more nous, as you have more options. It makes it seem easier but it's not. Also, I don't the limited change ones a bit naff as you lose interest if you don't get in the hunt early on. Yahoo one allows you to suddenly turn things round with some inspired selections. And, what on earth is "double points for a captain" all about? Take a ball winning midfielder who makes lots if interceptions and effects a game without scoring or having a direct assist: how many points can be win you in the Barclays one? He gets recognised in the other one for his contribution. Also, you still have to be careful. Take a player out and he scored lots of points, his value increases and you can no longer afford to put him back in.
They've actually changed the bonus point system this season to help defensive minded players a bit more: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/the-scout/ http://allthingsfpl.wordpress.com/2...thin-fantasy-premier-league-fantasy-football/
At work the guys do a Metro one and they are trying to get me in on it with flattery such as 'but you know loads about football' and 'you would well win it mate' when really they want an extra £10 in the pot every month (20-25 taking part so £200-£250 a month pot with another £200-£250 for the winner). The prize money does make it tempting but I swear some of them will spend hours a day on it once it starts so there is only really 5 people or so who can really win it, of course they are the ones pushing it on everyone else!
There's only 5 or so people who can win ours too, but it doesn't need hours a day. Just maybe an hour a week, tops if you follow football news anyway. The rest can be done from spending a few minutes checking two or three websites, your regular football knowledge & updating your team accordingly before the game-week deadlines: http://totalfpl.com/pricechanges http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/ (if you're playing for the sums of money you're on about, buy membership too) As long as you read the links I posted about tactics beforehand, you'll have no problem keeping up. I only joined my work league for the first time last year and was top for quite a bit of the season. The 'Good' people at FPL often aren't actually good, just better than all the people who joined and then leave their team alone after the second week or so.
