Why though? I don't really understand why they would bother

Anyway, at least that contradicts my theory, which is good. <ok>

Dick, if we get a good offer for Kermit, 5'3", Wiggy or Hamer then they will be sold, so for a paper to publish that all players were available for sale is pretty safe thing to do.

The £40m is probably a guess by The Sun based on the fact that several buyers have pulled out based on price. TJ and his backers probably just want their money back and I think we can all make an educated guess on how that comes to £40m

Who owns The People I wonder?

I see that CL have decided that the supporters buying the Club is a non-starter now based on the amount of money required (up front and on an on-going basis) except for the CAST who still seem to think that you can run a club on £5.00 annual subscriptions?

Cast do not think that you can run a club on £5 and they have never said that.I think it is a bit disingenuous of you to make a snidely remark like that. I still think that an insider or a prospective buyer have given that story to the papers, The People and the Sunday Sun have decided to run it.

Raz seems to think that a supporter run club is an option..... it isn't.... Ebbsfleet put that arguement to bed once and for all.

A stadium the size of the Valley cost an awful lot of money to run (I would guess between £1.5m to £2m pa) so a club will need AT LEAST Championship football to have a hope of covering this. A supporter funded club will soon fall to non league football like Luton have. If you think that is snidely then I am sorry but from what I have read there has been no proposal to increase the annual fee from £5 and yet they still talk of running the club.

Depends - when I was there we would spend all day checking the wires. Sometimes if a story comes up that looks interesting they will go ahead and rush it to press. Whilst there I saw a story of Louis Figo signing for a team in the Gulf, took it to my editor who told me to run with it. He then joined Inter Milan I think a couple of days later.

Obviously no field research went in to it. I'm surprised it went to print though - with these scenarios they usually keep it to the website <ok>

The gist of this "story" is that Charlton are in financial difficulties, which I think every Charlton fan knows already.

I would like to advise against ignoring the comments of an ex-Sun employee. My theory had started on similar ground and ended somewhere that I hoped wasn't true. I don't think it's a good road to go down.

Thanks for the insight, Mary <ok>

It's not impossible for it to have been planted. To be fair an ex-colleague wouldn't neccessarily give up a source if it was a tip off from someone inside the club. But why I doubt this is because I wasn't aware before this story that The Suns desk had a strong enough contact with anyone that high up from CAFC. I've certainly asked enough times for any news about Charlton!!!!

If it's been planted, it's not been planted from inside

Possible- but the fact it was in two papers suggests to me it was on a wire. It wouldn't be an exclusive to either paper so not sure what interest they'd have in publishing it for a favour. And though I haven't read it, from the picture I can't see it down as an "exclusive" though someone might be able to let me know otherwise?

    The rest of the article.

Charlton are on the market for a whopping £40M. The Valley Club are in financial trouble and all of boss Chris Powell's team are available for transfer. Yet despite the Addicks losing around 7m a year, chairman Michael Slater has told five interested parties they will have to cough up £40M for a buy out.

Powell worked wonders to keep the Londoners in the Championship last term. But the money troubles look likely to hit his chances of getting. Into the promotion mix this time around.

Maybe just maybe an ex employee or a jumped up wannabee chairman with a war chest of £3000 looking to make trouble? Who knows?

Logically, is it likely to be a leak or a plant? A plant suggests its complete horse manure and a leak is another way of perhaps promotional activities by the board to generate interest in the club as a wholesale. . I thought I read somewhere in June that Slater (only fools and horses comes to mind every time!) said he was not interested in selling. I suspect it was a plant by subversive forces looking to undermine confidence.

I seem to remember a similar thing last year. Powell will be sacked by December and the club placed in Admin etc. all from a very credible source.
