As much as I'd love to believe it really is just speculation I can only see this ending 2 ways: Bale to Madrid. Bale being forced to stay but being unhappy and his form suffering. Anyone that really thinks Bale is happy to stay is deluding themselves. For him not to have said anything this far down the line there is no way he wants to stay. Even Spurs haven't said "Bale wants to stay", just that he IS staying. I know some people think he is just keeping his options open for a move / more money by not commenting but he could also just say "I would be interested in Real Madrid but would also be happy to stay at Tottenham if we can work out a solution over a new contract" therefore not commiting either way. I just think after so long his absolute silence speaks volumes and I'd like to see him moved on if he is not going to commit, via a contract or even just verbally, to our club. Don't get me wrong if he came out tomorrow and stated he'd like to stay / signed a new contract I'd forgive him in a heartbeat - But he has gone so long without commenting that I find that highly unlikely.
Modric played well the season we "imprisoned" him. They have to because they still need people to bid in subsequent windows.
On a seperate note what do you think happens when a club meets a players agent. Here is a quote from Kinnear speaking about Newcastle's move for Bent... "We were with Darren's agent for two or three hours, we thrashed out a deal" I know there are lots of clauses etc in player's contracts but seriously? 2 - 3 hours? The only reason I can see it taking that long is if one of them has put forward an offer and the other has literally sat there arms folded going "nuh - uh no way" while the other keeps repeating "Well... thats our offer"
I agree but I think the way in which they are "good" affects that. Modric has natural talent and can spot a pass and play it regardless of how he is "feeling" - Bale seems much more of a confidence based player in the sense that to take it past 4-5 players then unleash a thunderbolt from nowhere / the finishes he makes takes an awful amount of confidence, self belief and desire which would surely take a knock if he was unhappy / forced to stay?
lewandowski has been forced to stay at dortmund and is reacting fine and will just get on with his job, Ronaldo was forced to stay at utd for a year and never effected his game and as been mentioned modric was superb. so If Bale was forced to stay, he would jus get on with his job as any sulking or disappointment would go and If he was truly set on Madrid it would happen as long as he carried on his form. am trying to think of players that have denied moves and never performed............... not many that spring to mind.
I think 2-3 hours is not long at all. No doubt player contracts are very complicated indeed and include lots of individualised clauses.
Just wanted to say that I'm a bit surprised by all the disbelief and anger on here over the payment plan for the potential Bale fee. As far as I'm aware ALL transfer fees are paid in installments like this. We probably still owe money on any player we've bought in the last three or four years. OK - five years does seem excessive but this may well be standard. One thing I'm very sure of - huge transfer fees are never paid in full in one installment. Which is not to say I do not hope Real Madrid and UEFA rot in hell. I most certainly DO hope that.
Yeah, right! Probably took him an hour or so to understand that the clauses involved were not the pointy bits on the end of pawses.
What move was Adebayor denied during his career? Not sure what situation you're refering to. Not sure about the Berbatov example either. When was he denied a move for a whole season? If only the bastard HAD not got his way over a move. Unfortunately this is not a brutal reality that the poor little poppet has had to endure as I recall.
Why would any club deny ade a move and berba got his move. examples I was trying to remember where players who where forced to stay and played a shadow of themselves that season, as usually any initial sulking goes...... unless they are complee morons!
If it's any consolidation I laughed out loud and also pictured Joe Kinnear pissed while saying '' here pussy pussy pussy, show me them pawses''.... as Darren Bent is sat there open mouthed with a pen in his hand. my sick mind had to take your joke further
That's sometimes how negotiations go. If you are in a negotiation and speaking then it's odds on that you're giving something away!
I'm not 20% of the fee upfront is quite frankly taking the piss. 50% is reasonable and the norm. That is how Soldado has been agreed 50% up front then 2 further payments. Why on earth would we agree to 20% up front?
The only one I can think off was Van Houdjonk(?) at Forest. He went on strike after he was denied a move when he moaned that the club broke promises to sign quality players. I think he was on strike for a few months.
Posted this on another thread but think it's a point I'd like to make regarding our transfer / Bale situation... I think the Bale situation is actually not as bad as the Modric / Berba situations. Reasoning below taken from that other thread: With Modric and Berbatov both players were our standout players by a country mile and frankly the players we had around them weren't that impressive. On top of that they were "only" going for £30m~ which meant we could buy 1 top class player, or 2 good but not world class players. With the Bale situation, while he is better than both Berbatov and Modric, we have a squad with quality all the way through it (Lloris, Verts, Kaboul, Sandro, Paulinho, Soldado, Lennon, Dembele, Walker - all players other top 4 teams would be interested in). On top of that IF he is sold we will be getting in the region of £80m - £100m - Enough to sign 3 Top class players or 2 top class players and 2 up and coming prospects.
