According to the Independent we are looking at making an attempt to sign McCarthy once we wrap up our striker signings. They suggest the signing would be as a replacement for a PSG bound Cabaye. They also mention that Wigan want £20million for him, but NUFC think they can get him for significantly less.

Seems like pure fabrication to me, but he would be a good replacement if Cabaye did leave - as long as the price was right.

I would take him for sure. Good player. No way we, or anyone else is paying £20 million for him though

When we gave them Perchinio for next to nothing, why didn't we try and get him then.
Perch could have been part of the deal.

If the article has any accuracy (big if) and the suggestion that Wigan want £20million is correct, well that spells out very clearly why the domestic transfer market is dying a death.

I cannot stress enough how much I don't want him here. I have an irrational hatred for Wigan and any bastard associated with them after last season. It was bad enough selling Perch to the ****s but the last thing I want is to see one of them in our colours.

One player I hoped we'd have an interest in. I also like McManaman. The problem will always be the premium on British players.

There is no way we would be going above say 8 million for him, even if we do sell Cabaye for 20+. And I cant see Everton going above that either. If that is really what Whelan expects for him the he is deluded. Only the big 4 or 5 would throw money around like that for a non goalscoring midfielder and there is no way he is anywhere near good enough to play for a top 6 team. Having said that it happened with Henderson, but I don't think Liverpool are quite that stupid now.

Hopefully the real Cabaye will turn up next year (if he is still here). He got a lot of excuses made for him last season from some fans, be it Pardews tactics, how he was used or others making him look bad. He was just garbage for me bar a short spell after Xmas when the new arrivals gave seem to re-ignite his interest. I do think his lack of pre season and not getting a rest because of the Euros impacted, as did having his head turned. Of course he has played international football again this summer, but only a couple of friendlies in early June.

That's the thing init mate. IF the real cabaye shows up then he pretty much runs the show. We were too reliant on a guy that just wasn't there. I must admit i blamed the tactics for alot of the season but looking back a football player should still be able to pass a ball, i mean he was only playing a little deeper and don't get me started on the corners...As you say with a decent rest under his belt there should be no excuses next year.
