Why is there a Shelvey thread on this board? The ugly cockerney bonehead is no longer a Liverpool player
I remember when they signed him - the jacks were lining up to slate him, hopefully he'll prove his doubters wrong
The question should be "Why was he out of his depth at Liverpool?". A bit like Joe Allen, Joe suited our style of play, but hasn't set the world alight at Liverpool because you play a different style and allow the influence of Gerrard to be too great. We can't judge Shelvey on one performance - he did some good and bad things last night, but he offers the Swans something different, which is much needed (ie a bit of directness/physical strength). I was unimpressed when we signed him, but was pleased with his performance last night so I hope I am proved wrong and he can keep playing like that all season
We allowed our best midfielder to have too high an influence? Sorry if he's far superior to most players in that role and we're playing him to his strengths I think Shelvey will come good for you, I hope so anyway.
Thanks for the condescending doh. Rogers cannot implement the playing style he wants at Liverpool because Gerrard can't fit into it. Rogers had to adapt his playing style accordingly. You won't see the true Rogers style until Gerrard leaves
He'll be passing the ball to death, we'll knock him into shape for sure, must admit I wasn't too keen on him coming to us, because I've seen him play some very good games for you, and then I've seen him play awful, so thought there was an issue with consistency and discipline, didn't realise Rodgers played him out of position too!....................
I think that is true but the change was for the better too. Maybe it has taken someonee like Gerrard to force his hand and alter his methods slightly? afterall, BR is a very young manager that is learning still learning his trade.
Although Rodgers can mix the formation up I do wish he had a bit more in his locker re the WAY we play So this can only be a good thing? #ThatsifyoumeantsomeonE
Well, it wasn't the smartest thing I've read...Gerrard had his best season since 08 so clearly playing through him wasn't so bad an idea. Just because the media say he's getting old and past it doesn't mean he is. He had a superb season and added the direct quick playing element to our game that BR doesn't normally encourage but, because it's Gerrard, he allows. I think towards the end of the season, Rodgers changed his style slightly to be more flexible and not just one dimensional passing around. Gerrard was crucial in this. He can play it safe and simple, but his vision is amazing and his range of passing second to none in the league. I think it's a change for the better to have players in a team who can mix it up. Gerrard is still quality and if we have to let his influence be 'too great' then better for us.
Speaking of e's, have you seen that EE advert with Kevin Bacon on? I used to like him (well liked a couple of his films) but now, because of those ads, I just think he's a ****pig. Shame
Results improved when he made the change - there is no disputing that. Rogers could not implement the style he wanted because it takes time. He tried to stick it out at Reading but got sacked. Martinez had done a couple of years of groundwork at Swansea before Rogers carried on the work. At Liverpool Rogers did not have time - it's as simple as that. He tried to implement his plan and partially failed and thus had to change the system to one that would give him better results in the short term. But you can bet your bottom dollar that his long term plan is for a Liverpool team without Gerrard where he can play tip-tap football.
I wouldn't say he has failed, he is still at the club and only a year into the job. You yourself have pointed out it takes time to implement, why burden him with the failure brush so early? We not praise him for accepting that things needed to be a little different? Whether that is short or long term we will see.
First half of the season, learning and trying to implement a new style and way of playing. Second half of the season when style has been implemented then top 4 form. Who knows what this season will bring but form has picked up as BR's had more time to implement ideas and bring in new players.
I said he "tried to implement his plan and partially failed". I am not saying he is a failure. What I am saying is that he will only be allowed to fully implement his philosophy once Gerrard is no longer a Liverpool player. Only then, will you see Rogers true style which will serve you well in Europe.
'The Liverpool way' is basically pass and move. Rodgers likes to keep the ball on the floor and pass it around. They're not so dissimilar in principle except Gerrard can pass the ball on the floor and knock sweeping 40 yard passes forward. Why not give him freedom to do that if the opportunity arises? Pass the opponent to death, as Rodgers claimed he wanted to do, is all great but if the ball never gets to the opposition box to be scored, what's the point? Rodgers is young enough to develop the style he wants to implement; I'd be surprised it he tried to stop the team occasionally playing direct football. Edit, to clarify. Consider Barca as the 'role model' passing club. They've been found out on multiple occasions because they can't mix it up. I can't imagine Rodgers being so stubborn to still want to implement a solely tika taka style of play and nothing else - especially in the English game where teams can be very tough to break down.
But when your trying to play tiptap football and you've got someone booting it 50 yards and giving it straight back to the opposition it defeats the whole system.
