R.I.P. Always despised them for some reason that I've never been able to fully explain but this is absolutely awful news for the city and for football in general. We mustn't forget how close we were to a similar situation. I hope they come back one day like others before them.
Yeah, just saw this tick over onto the BBC Sport news feed. Sad times. ("Oh Sammy Clingan, it could've been you" - although I think he plays for Kilmarnock now)
What happens to their spot in the league? Does someone get unrelegated, or does another team from the tier below get promoted?
According to the BBC they're being expected to start the campaign as normal, but probably have at least a 15 point deduction
I'm keeping half an eye on developments here: http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/live-coventry-city-fc-creditors-5430930 and, as you say, a 15 point deduction seems likely. But then Pompey, Luton, etc have never really recovered from sanctions like that so good luck Covvers
You're right Cromer, but if the club is run sensibly after the deduction its not all doom and gloom, just look at Southampton. I know their deduction was only 10 points, but had they handled it like Portsmouth they'd be languishing in League 2 now
Hang on, I'm confused. Doesn't 'liquidation' imply that they are winding up (as opposed to 'administration')?
I live very near Coventry during term time at Uni and the clubs means a great deal to the people of the city. You don't see any people walking around in Manchester United shirts there, it is a bit like Norwich in that sense. The club has had it struggles of late but this has come about really fast because there was never any talk of this last season. For a club the size of Coventry to end up in this situation and all because of terrible management at boardroom level frankly stinks, but this is what happens in modern football.
The issue is that there are a multiple owners and holding companies involved in the running of the club so a very similar situation to Pompey.. I would imagine that they will be kept afloat somehow but will have to strip their squad completely and field the youth team otherwise they will collapse under their own costs.. I have read somewhere that the deduction could be anywhere between 15 and 30 and to think the stories of Portsmouth & Darlington would be enough of a warning to clubs
It is a good warning, but unfortunately some clubs are too far gone already to be able to save themselves and some have owners who either don't care or think they can get round sanctions by having money tied up in four or five companies all linked in together.
This doesn't augur well for them :-( STATEMENT FROM PAUL APPLETON, JOINT ADMINISTRATOR FOR COVENTRY CITY FC LIMITED At today's reconvened creditors' meeting, all parties except Arena Coventry Limited and HMRC accepted the CVA proposals. At the meeting held on Tuesday, ACL had put forward modifications that were not compliant with the terms of the Insolvency Act and Rules. This was explained to both them and their legal representatives at the time. The adjournment provided them with an opportunity to put forward modifications that were compliant with the law in order to make use of the time made available by the adjournment that they themselves proposed. However, despite being given this further opportunity, they declined. Accordingly, when asked whether they were in favour or not of the Proposals, ACL confirmed their rejection. Therefore, the CVA has been rejected.
I have always, for no good reason, hated them rather than Everton for our 1985 relegation. However I have lot of mates who are true sky blues and feel their pain.
Looks like Coventry have only been given a 10 point deduction. That is so not fair when you think that Leeds got 15 points and Luton 30 was it ? If you have sympathy or not this stinks if you ask me
Yeah me too, I know it wasn't really their fault but I've always had Coventry right near the top of my 'most disliked club' list, used to hate putting their stickers in my Panini album as well back in the late 80's, never liked them at all. Unlike you however I can honestly say that I don't know a single Sky Blues fan, and don't ever remember coming across one at any point other than match day. Bit weird that now I think of it, there probably aren't many bigger clubs I can say that about. However that all said I wouldn't wish this situation on anybody, my dislike of the club is certainly nothing personal to any of their fans who I really feel for at the moment so I hope for their sake's that something gets sorted out and the club can continue to fill their spot in the league. It's a ****ing joke when clubs like this are scrimping around to pay the heating bill, laying off staff and on the verge of going to the wall, breaking the hearts of thousands of die-hard fans both young and old when there are mediocre players in the Premiership earning £60k a week to sit on their arses twiddling their thumbs. That's why I'll forever for grateful to Delia, McNally and of course Paul Lambert for sorting the finances and getting us the hell out of the third tier and back into the big time - if you can't beat em, join em
