As many of you will know, the pink'un have a special 1993 twitter account with snippets from our Euro-Tour of that year. I've just seen several requests to David Mcnally about releasing a DVD of highlights of the 6 matches we played, as most people (me included) only had a video - and I have no working VHS player any more. Just curious as to a) how many think it's a good idea,? and b) how many people would be interested in buying a copy? (Suffolk "historians" need not reply - although they are more than welcome to)
I'm pretty sure Ipswich towns European highlights are individually carved into a wax phonograph cylinder so I wouldn't worry too much about VHS. I think a DVD would be a great idea
i think its a bit embarrassing really. i was lucky enough to have been around at our peak. when i first started going to football (1988) we were consistently a top club who battled for the title and for the fa cup. we never won any of them but we were frequently in the mix in the closing weeks right through until 1993 (i thought norwich would always be that good - how wrong i was!). had it not been for heysel we would have qualified for europe four times i believe. as a club, we were robbed of a large chunk of the best period of the club so i get why we made a big deal out of it. we did at least get that one european campaign just before our rather rapid slide began. yes we beat bayern munich on their own patch - yes it was a big deal at the time - but we only played six games in total and only won two of them. we were hardly 'conquering' europe! i find it all a bit cringeworthy really - i'm not saying we shouldn't be proud of the run we had but it really wasn't that impressive, bar the munich games. it means very little to me right now, looking back. had we won the competition i'm sure i'd look back with delirium but we didn't. i'm far more fond of my memories of winning the championship in 2004, 2nd in 2011, league one too, even the play off final that we lost has stronger memories than our european campaign. the season before when we really did get close to winning the title is still the best season i've ever seen norwich have and that holds good memories too but other than munich, was it really that great?
I'd certainly hold the European stuff above the Championship wins in terms of excitement and anticipation. It was a new experience which will maybe never happen again, I'd bet my house we'll win the Championship again at somepoint in my life. The UEFA cup was a much bigger tournament back then than today. In terms of a single match experience the Play off loss was the most spine tingling event, walking up the stairs to the stand with the roof closed, the atmosphere was a truly spiritual experience.
TBH I normally respect most of what you post on here Supers, but your post above IMO is total bollocks. Beating the mighty Bayern on there own patch and being the first British side ever to do so was magnificent. I still remember that night as if it were yesterday, all we had at the time was a 14" portable TV linked up to a Satellite dish we watched the game with German commentary on SAT1 !! There, I even remember the name of the Kraut channel. Over two legs we should have beaten Inter Milan who, don't forget, went on to win the competition. Cringeworthy ? Have a day off mate
you misunderstand what i'm saying. it's not the match that i find cringeworthy or the achievement - its the idea of a dvd release! i was about 12 the season we played in europe - as i said above, i had only really experienced good times, league challenges and cup runs - i didn't know the highs and lows that football were all about at that time so it felt like something that would happen again and again. with the introduction of the premier league it has made it harder for clubs like norwich to even qualify for europe, let alone compete at the top of their own division so yes i was naive at the time but from my point of view, other than beating munich on their own turf (which was remarkable) it wasn't all that special to me and i find the idea of a dvd released chronicling our 'conquering europe' a bit false and a little embarrassing
I think Supers makes some interesting points, I remember our first game in Europe against Vitesse Arnham we only had a crowd of 16,000 which I still don't understand and would I want to watch highlights of either the Inter games, well quite frankly no. Onwards and upwards in my opinion.
I still have the videos with Rob Newman on the front cover. The Arsenal and Chelsea games were particularly good (Gunn does a Gordan Banks save in the Arsenal game and Fox tears them apart) and we really were competing at the highest level. I love the banter with two German fans outside Norwich market and of course the Munich game itself. John Motsons commentary is legendary in that game, he is genuinely as surprised as we all were when Norwich score twice. I would definetly like to see it brought to DVD. I could proberbly do it myself to be honest. Infact if McNally doesn't want to I may make a few copy's myself and peddle them out on EBay.
Was it not Barry Davies commentating? I remember heading back on the train next day - he was sat in same carriage. Anyway regardless, in response to Supers, i don't think we'd be intent on calling it "conquering" Europe at all. After all we didn't... It's simply a significant piece of NCFC history that I think should be available.
Well on the version I have its defo John Motson. It was live on the BBC. "And Robin's is well forward, and Goss is well forward too. And Norwich have scored!! Jeremy Goss AGAIN!!"
"When he scores goals, they're either spectacular or important - that one is both" Followed by "This is almost fantasy football" after Bowen's header made it 2 - 0
Please stop lads, our book keeper isn't going to be too impressed if she notices me sitting at my computer with a hard on
