On the other hand you also need solid players who can come in and do the job for a few games here and there due to first choice players being injured/suspended/needing a rest. Man Utd had plenty of these players (Park Ji-sung, Wes Brown, John O'Shea springing to mind) as well as older players who can't play every game but can be effective (Giggs, Scholes, Rio) Chelsea have had a few of the former (Mikel, Ferreira, Kalou), Arsenal have a few (Ramsey, Diaby, Eboue), whilst City have Milner and Barry for this reason.

True, you won't win anything with a team of Dawsons and Parkers (unless you're the 2004 Greece team...), but having them as options to hold on to a narrow lead or gring out a win is just as valuable.

Andros Townsend has admitted that he may have to leave Tottenham permanently following a number of loan spells.

The 22-year-old has been loaned out to nine different clubs since signing senior terms at White Hart Lane in 2008.

Although determined to make his mark at Spurs, where he has yet to start a Premier League fixture, the winger has taken a pragmatic view of his future.

"I'm 22. In football terms, I'm getting on a bit and I want to play sustained football on a permanent basis"
    Andros Townsend

"I think I either give it a go at Tottenham, get more game time, or look to move on a more permanent basis," Townsend said.

"I've had nine loans now. I enjoy going out on loan because it means I'm playing games.

"I'm not young anymore - I'm 22. In football terms, I'm getting on a bit and I want to play sustained football on a permanent basis."

Townsend, meanwhile, is hoping that Gareth Bale stays at Spurs despite the face of the intense speculation over Real Madrid luring the Welsh winger away from north London.

"I think Gareth Bale is playing more down the middle anyway," he added. "It gives me hope that I can try and break through this season if he continues to play down the middle."
    Motivation

Townsend's most recent move saw him spend the latter part of 2012-13 with QPR, and the approach of the Loftus Road club's manager is one that appeals to Townsend.

"Harry Redknapp, you know what he's about," he added. "He's a man motivator. He likes to play free-flowing attacking football. As you saw from the years at Spurs, it was attack, attack attack."

The England Under-21 international's displays for QPR last term did not go unnoticed by Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas.

"Andros did extremely well in QPR for a team during a difficult time," said Villas-Boas.

"So we have allowed him to come back, he's enjoying pre-season, he's showing great motivation to stay in the team. This is what you want from young players coming through."

This is exactly what I as getting at with Ceballos and Falque. None of them are young anymore. a decision needs to be made.
Are these "youngsters" good enough to play for us, or is it time they moved on as they haven't quite got the quality we need as we progress?

Tom Carroll has broken through and shown that he could well slot in this season and have a big role.

But what about the likes of Harry Kane as well. Is he really going to see any game time over Soldado, Ade (or his replacement) or Defoe?

I hope we give Townsend a chance, he earnt it the way he played at QPR. Ceballos is still young and needs at least one season on loan to see how he handles the physical side of the senior game in England. Falque can do one.

  5. Townsend has looked really good. A player very much in the Spurs mould. We'd be plain stupid to get rid of him, or to force him out for want of game-time.

Do you want to change the last sentence?,feeling a bit more less deflated now, with the Soldado agreement and Bale may well be staying,if that happens we could be challenging for the title!!!

I know we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves Roo but you say we couldn't bring anyone on to scare Teams like united? I don't agree. Looking at PNP's second team If Defoe came on he would cause problems, likewise Lennon. That's 2 players straight away. And players like Dempsey, Sigurdsson and Holtby hopefully can push on next year.
Look at our first 11 plus say 5 subs I honestly think we are not far off any other team in terms of quality. This is all dependent on us keeping Bale.

I did say with the exception of lennon, and then said later on "bar 1or 2". - referring to Defoe really.
"hopefully" can push on. This is exactly what I was getting at CJ. The other title contenders have players who WILL make an impact. Ours are iffy. That's the difference for me.

Iam so confused. I don't have a hangover, but you're giving me a headache! <laugh>

I agree Chelsea could "scare us" with some substitutes but I don't think any of the other top teams could. Maybe City, but players not starting for them never seem to care. Certainly Arsenal, Liverpool and United (apart from Rooney) don't.

I think Lennon, Defoe, Dempsey, Gylfi, Holtby is better than or equal to what most teams can offer up.

So a possible bench of: Nani, Kagawa, Young, Rooney, Hernandez doesn't worry you in any way?

As I said, Arsenal are similar to us IMO. They don't have a lot on the bench either in terms of game changers or impact players. (based on both teams last season)

However, with our 3 new additions, I feel we're stronger at the moment, which is why I referred to City, Chelsea and United.

Fair enough TJ, but IMO those 3 teams have quality over quantity. well, they have both to be honest! <laugh>
