There have been a few good history of Hull threads on here recently. Here's another one..... How many remember the ferries from Corpo. Pier to New Holland? Somebody missed a trick, not keeping them for the 'heritage' business. I, for one, remember going on a Jazz Cruise down river and back, one Sunday in the 60's. Another thing I found out was that the bar would open at 11a.m. and not close until late night. It was like being in international waters! You could buy a return and stay drinking all day, but you had to remember to get off at the Pier (and not get stranded at New Holland)! http://www.paddlesteamers.info/Hull-NewHolland.htm http://www.paddlesteamers.info/TattershallCastle.htm http://www.paddlesteamers.info/WingfieldCastle.htm http://www.paddlesteamers.info/LincolnCastle.htm
Wasn't quite a bit salvaged from the Lincoln Castle? - I remember reading there are plans to re-build it using some of the original parts.
The Lincoln Castle Preservation Society were trying to buy the bits that there were stripped off the ship, with the idea of putting them in a newly built hull and using it as a tourist attracting in Grmisby, but I don't think they managed to raise the money.
Is not the Lincoln Castle going to be rebuilt as the LCPS have the original plans to do so ? Not sure how the funds are though for it ?
Then there was this later boat http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/viewship.asp?id=11696 http://neilholmes.photoshelter.com/image/I0000i53w0PdTxps http://www.flickr.com/photos/m0aep/8568573380/
For those who never got to experience the ferries, here's a video of the ferry running from New Holland to Hull in 1969...
I remember going on hovercraft to Grimsby when at primary school in the late 60's. Then later in life Hessle foreshore for a pint on th Castle. http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnmightycat/5781538494/
We don't do enough to promote our maritime heritage, there should be a trawler in Princess Dock(opposite the Maritime Museum).
I was in Rugby Tavern in town and the Landlord was saying that Hull is getting HMS something or other.. cant remember the name (too many shandys) apparently its an aircraft carrier.
If they got shut of that piddling fountain, there's probably enough room. But there is also Albert Dock, very close to the Marina and the projected Arts development.
It's HMS Illustrious and it's unlikely to happen. Nor should it, our heritage is fishing, not aircraft carriers and the thing is bloody massive.
Have been on the ferry many times, before the bridge used to take it to Grimsby to the fish market, when we has a vessel discharging there. There was a group of guys I knew who used to drink in the Oberon until 3pm on a Saturday and if the tides were right would take the ferry to New Holland and back, as you could get bottles of Hull Brewery mild or bitter on board. This usually got them back to the pier when Minerva was opening for their Saturday night session.
There's definitely enough room and Albert Dock is too far away for a tourist attraction. That's where the bloke wants to park HMS Illustrious, but it's also the proposed site for the cruise liner terminal(which is a far better idea).
What did you go and do that for, John? You've got me well upset....!! [Edit: http://www.paul-gibson.com/history/hull-brewery.php ]
Sorry Stan, it actually brought back happy memories for me also. EDIT I think the bitter was called Amber if my memory serves well?
