CARL MARKHAM – 01 AUGUST 2013

QPR midfielder Joey Barton has dismissed speculation - sparked by comments from his own agent - that he is keen on a move to Everton.

Yesterday the player's representative Willie McKay said he had contacted the Toffees, the club Barton supported as a boy, to say he would be willing to take a 50 per cent cut in reported wages of £70,000-a-week to be able to play for them.

Despite McKay's claims manager Roberto Martinez liked the midfielder, it is understood there is little likelihood of a deal going through.

Everton great Neville Southall yesterday likened the player to Forrest Gump in that he "runs up and down all day".

Barton has taken that criticism in his stride but pointed out his preferred option was a return to Marseille where he spent last season on loan.

"It's well known who I support. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that out," he wrote on Twitter.

"Good football agents will always be looking to move players, that's how they make money.

"Recent rumours are slightly wide of the mark, everyone knows where I would like to end up, in France, playing in the Champions League for Olympique Marseille, nothing has changed my end.

"If not, I am contracted to QPR and will give my all to help them regain their Premier League status.

"If something happens and both clubs decide differently than I will assess my options.

"No matter what happens, I intend to enjoy my football and play with a smile on my face. Again, wherever that maybe. Careers are too short.

"Hope that clears my situation up for everyone. Stop listening to all the tittle-tattle."

Barton wanted to go to Everton, gets his agent to leak the story. Everton laugh it off and tell him to do one.
Barton then claims the agent did it on his own and he always wanted to go to Marseilles.

That about sums it up.

He's desperate to get the chance to play in the Champions League with Marseille. Wait it out Tony, Joey has to drop his demands to make it happen.

I think it's certain people on here who are holding the spades, and are obsessed with bashing him over the head with them every chance they get! It's boring now, time to give it up now I think......

Why don't Marseille pay us transfer fee for him he's still got 2years on this contract. We know Barton is not about the money let him take pay cut and we'll wish him well

Problem is even if they get him for free they can't afford his wages, if they have to pay for him it will never happen. Only hope is a free transfer and that Joey takes a massive paycut and forfeits the remainder of his contract with us.

Would it not be better for Mr Barton to shut up and give his all to the club he is with, after all we all know he is a good 100% committed player on the pitch..we all know he is the type of player we need atm, before u all have a go at me i know what happened at Man city and all his tweets but would it not be better for our club to have Barton playing for us and giving 100% then have a team of money grabbers giving 10% (at a push) and not careing. What we needed last season was someone to give the so called stars a kick up the Rs and to get them playing as a team. i for one would like him to play again for us...maybe im in the minority but after reading Warnocks book i see what we had to put up with so come on lets all get together and play as one

I did say after Barton got sent of at City and the lynch mobs were baying for blood, that Barton would probably go out on loan and at some point come back to us, and when we are in the **** one day he'd be given the chance to come on as sub and given the chance to redeem himself.

Looks like that is coming true. I hate it when I'm right. The thing is, if he did get a foot back in and things do go right for us this season, maybe even he will start to enjoy things and maybe even some of the haters will start to warm to him if he's part of a promotion team?

But at the end of the day, he claims to want Champions League football with Marsielle? Well we've said we will let him go for nothing and Marsielle have said they'll have him at half the wages, so it's in Bartons hands, let's see how much he does really want that move. But if he did want it wouldn't it have happened by now?

I honestly hope he stays and helps us gain promotion. If Redknapp can motivate him then we'll be a lot harder to beat with him in the midfield.

"What is he going to add to Everton? I think they have already got a kitman.

"I don't see how he will fit into Everton's style of play. He isn't the best passer in the world. Yes he is fit and runs up and down all day but Forrest Gump did that as well, didn't he?

I agree with Goatey. He seems resigned to having to play well up until January to try to get a move

Totally this. Can be a very decent footballer, especially at this level. If he puts in the effort while playing for us, he'll be getting my support.

It looks increasingly likely that Barton and Taarabt will stay - at their worst, they can both be negative influences. Question is whether the spirit of the rest of the team can neutralise this, and perhaps even get the best out of both players for the promotion push. We need a strong and influential captain. Dunne, Henry, Simpson...who knows?

So.....will Barton be starting on Saturday then? I know the team chopped and changed a lot last year, but I haven't got a clue what any of the starting eleven will be!?!?!

I've got liquid ass in excitement
