Would you let someone who owed you money for 12 months borrow 3 times the amount?

If the reports are correct, it seems that the wonderful Real Madrid still owe Spurs 35mil for Luca Modric. Now they want to buy Bale, at a figure somewhere between 80 and 125 million. Seems mighty strange to me that this can be allowed to happen, and I am pretty sure that if this was a British club having not paid a foreign side for a player, then EUEFA would hijack the deal. Is it one rule for bankrupt Spain, and different rules for British clubs?

I assume Bale is still a United target, but maybe Real might have to cash in on Ronaldo to finance the deal for Bale but ONLY IF Spurs insist on the money up front

Considering Real paid a similar figure up front for Ronaldo, surely Tottenham will insist on the same for Bale?

Someone on the spurs board was saying they were paying the Modric fee in installments, but they were behind on payments.

I think Levy is just trying to price out Madrid for a move towards Bale. If he tells them he's not for sale they'll continue to tap Bale up. If Levy just keeps increasing the price of the transfer, Madrid may eventually just give up.

Hopefully Madrid have to sell Ronaldo to find the Bale transfer. Then Levy out of spite turns around and sells us Bales as well just to give Madrid the two finger salute.

Harry Redknapp made reference to an alleged £40 m bid by Chelsea but then also said he was unsure if it was actually true. Besides I said best deal not necessarily the most money. Who knows what makes up the best deal in Levy's mind?

Do you think Madrid want to pay in instalment again for Bale? No way can they front up 80+ million with the new FFP rules coming into affect. But long term instalment can't really make much sense surely. Just think if they sell Bale and miss out on CL football next season, the instalments will just be making up what they have failed to earn in the CL. Keep Bale one more season make the champions league then it evens itself out anyway. If people understand what I'm getting at, well it makes sense in my head anyway............. With the new additions to the squad Spurs have every chance to make the CL places. Bale is still 23 he should sign a new deal get a huge pay rise, and put something in his contract that says if they fail to make the CL he is free to talk to other clubs..

FFP makes no difference to instalment plans - it's the amortised value of the transfer which affects the books. But you are right that Spurs would almost certainly insist on the payment all in one go, as much to make it more difficult for Madrid as to get cash to buy players.

I agree with you about the contract to an extent - Bale could do very well to sign a new contract for higher wages with a provision that if Spurs ever miss out of the CL spots he can leave for around £60m, thus essentially giving him the choice of any big club if he leaves in future. But then he runs the risk that Spurs do an Arsenal, and just bump along in 4th spot for half a decade not winning anything and he still has to force a move to try and get anywhere. He'd also look like a prize twat if he signs the new contract, Spurs scrape 4th next season, and he decides he wants to leave anyway.

No, if the £80m isn't upfront so it can be reinvested then there is no point in selling Bale. Thanks for the post though, now I understand why THFC are turning down ******edly overpriced bids <ok>

let us all admit that as long as the player is not a British, they will always prefer Barca or Real
