£1.1m for a player who has never played in League 1 and who has only made a few appearances in the Championship! Thats a better deal for us than it is for them I think. They must rate him very highly, risky signing though.
Another Britt bites the dust....... He has so much potential for the future - bet on him to score 20 + this season for sure.
Many of our best player have come to us having only ever played lower league / non league football He looks like an exciting choice to us ..... Fingers crossed
and outs: McGinn Yeates Bonham Iwelumo Forsythe Hall Hodson Eustace Dickenson Hogg Assambalonga Bauben? Mingoia? Jenkins? Up to date, I think !! So all the foreign players out, and English in, right????? Just to cause some discussion....Obvious influx of foreign players going on at the Vic. Just look at the OUTS list above...
I believe Bauben's contract has finished, so is a free agent, currently looking for a new club. I think it's the same with Mingoia, who is maybe on trial with Accrington.... Neither are on Watford's books any more.
Jenkins was last seen in a Leyton Orient shirt - had a trial there last week IIRC. He's still under contract with us though - runs out next June.
How short sighted can you get ? Your vast knowledge guarantees all the new 'uns will automatically settle in and be a success does it ? Whats the 'US' in the better deal (unless you've got shares),these owners havent spent so far so whats in it for the supporter. Goodbye another promising young player who could have been given a chance at a club generally considered larger than the Posh...sorry Minx !
Unfortunately we don't know the ins and outs of it. Britt had one year left on his contract so who's to say he was refusing to sign an extension, in the search of first team football? He may have seen the others come in and think that it will be yet another season on loan, having to learn another new set of names and just wanted some stability in his life! I think most Watford fans had high hopes for the lad and are disappointed with the move, but his experience doesn't really go beyond League 2 and if the suggested £1.55m is correct, it is good money. Maybe the move will come back to bite us on the behind... or maybe we will push on and expect a higher standard of player. Only time will tell!
nick, don't forget there are ways of increasing expenditure on players other than transfer fees. I can't imagine that we would've got and kept a keeper of Almunia's quality if the wage ceiling hadn't been raised.
No doubt these are on decent wages..no doubt also in majority of cases no experience of the game here. Almunia not the best example, good to have someone with that experience always but from what I understand many Arsenal fans would question the word 'quality'.I suggest that most clubs would have at least given Assombalonga a chance this season in view of what he did elsewhere even if in a lower league, 'iffy' bank balance Mr Pozzo ?
Britt - One year left on his contract? Are you sure? I thought he had been given a new contract last season...........
http://www.watfordfc.com/news/article/130111-assombalonga-new-contract-592144.aspx Was a one year contract with the option of a 2nd year.
Oldnick - clearly you enjoy playing devils advocate and there is nothing wrong with that per se - certainly it helps to stimulate healthy debate on the forum. However, I dont think I have ever heard anything positive come from you and it is starting to get a bit stale. On the few brief occasions that Britt came on for us he didnt do anything spectacular and as others have pointed out his season at Southend (L.2) wasnt even that spectacular (esp the 2nd half of it) so c.1.5M seems to be a good deal (particularly bearing in mind that we have 1st option if he does come good and presumably there is a sell on clause too). I think you are in the very small minority still not convinced that things are looking much brighter for Watford than they have for a very very long time. The players on the open day may be 'foreign' but on the contrary I felt that they held the interests of the club and community more to heart than many English players do. Cassetti, Pudil, Abdi, Battocchio and others have shown in person, on the pitch (and in Watford town centre!) how much they care about representing our club and the fact they all came back for a 2nd crack at promotion emphasises this. I wont go on because I dont want to waste my time but I for one am happy with the board, the personnel (particularly Zola who is a true gent) and the general state of our club and am genuinely excited for saturday and the coming season.
The simple fact is that 2 years ago, Britt would have been the great hope for our forward line alongside the likes of Iwelumo with McGinn, Forsythe and Eustace in midfield and Hodson and Dickinson as the full backs and Bond in goal. All things considered, we would have been quite happy with these players in the line-up at the start of this season and would have been hoping for a mid-table position in the Championship - which most fans would have considered a success. But resources and standards have changed immeasurably for the better - few would seriously argue with this even though individuals may question the longer term motives of the current owners. I, for one, am pretty contented with the fact that we are in a position to sell a player with a minimum of first team appearances and, arguably, not much hope of many more in the Championship let alone the Premiership, for the fee we have reportedly been paid.
Personaly I like having a variety of views aired and I like to see Oldnick comment on here regardless of what is said and I would encourage more viewpoints from others. It's good and healthy for the Forum or it will become sterile.
Same old, same old Mr. Negative - extolling the virtues of a player he has never seen play. Ask any Sarfend fan, and whilst they would welcome him there, he did not exactly set the world alright playing their style of play last season. As has been said we need to aim higher to achieve higher....I would have put good money on the usual negativity coming out of Reading when it was announced he had moved to Posh.
