Is the Celtic board short sighted... Celtic have had loads of chances to make the leap to Champions League regulars but always seem to shoot themselves in the foot by not strengthening at the right time. They seem to want to "wait and see". Look at Porto - they won the UEFA cup, then the Champions League the year after playing Celtic. Now, they are ever presents in champions league. If these rumours continue of players going with mediocre replacements, will folk renew their season tickets. No-one wants Europa League but imagine no Europe this season!!!
It's the league we're in. As well as Porto there's Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and the likes of Braga or Maritimo making an impact in the CL/EL every season meaning the co-efficient for the country stays high and they can buy players confident in the knowledge they're guaranteed European football every season. Who have we got? Both Celtic and Rangers have made arses of themselves in Europe but generally punch above their weight. Then what? I remember Aberdeen having a wee run in the EL a few years ago but that's about it. The rest of the teams usually get pumped out before the group stages (and often in embarrassing fashion - see Hibs!). It's a difficult balancing act when you don't know if you're going to be in the CL, the EL or out of Europe altogether.
Excuses, excuses. Maybe it's because in European terms you are minnows and no decent player wants to sign for you. Look at when Scottish football was at it's healthiest in Europe in the late 70's and 80's. When there was was not financial disparity between clubs in Scotland when first Rangers had all the money and now Celtic have it all. You ****s want to have your cake and eat it. Sorry, doesn't work that way.
What are you talking about you senile, old tit? Did I not say Celtic punched above their weight? Are the other Scottish clubs competing in Europe? Every year they get pumped out by the first half decent team they come up against. Now, away stick your head in a gas oven ya smelly, old sheep molester.
I don't see the point in the board making a profit on players if they are unwilling to invest any profits on decent replacements who may cost a bit more than they would like to spend.
We should be buying less players for more money and playing them alongside our own players that come through the youth system! We are getting worse for giving youth a chance than ever before.
Getting worse at giving them a chance or getting worse at finding and developing them so that they are good enough to get a chance?
Sorry ER but Scottish clubs were most competitive in europe in the 60s and early 70s - not the 80s. 5 european finals reached by Rangers or Celtic between '61 and '72, including only 'big cup' win. Plus other semi-finals reached by Celtic (four), Rangers (twice), Dundee (twice), Hibs, Killie, and Dunfermline. Beats Aberdeen's fluke in 83.
Why did they bother? They should've liquidated and kept the history whilst avoiding paying the debts. Silly Pars
We get no help from Scottish football hence starting our qualification for champion league in July and makes the manager job harder in terms of getting players in. Hooper left because England manager dosn't rate it , Lennon eyed up replacement from Hamburg laughed at Scottish football . Last season we got to the last 16 made 20 million ,Man City finished bottom of the group and made 25 million . This season Pacos Ferreira are straight into champion league thanks to Porto and Benfica a team we put out last season !!!
Their most prominent fan blogger has apologised to the creditors that are getting a penny in the pound Doesn't he know that they're all petty agenda-driven hate-mongers? The guy has no dignity at all...
The Celtic model looks to be buying players like wanyama and hooper before moving them on for a very healthy profit. CL money is a bonus. Looks to be working too because of the scouting system.
Give the board a chance, it's very early to do business - come the end of August there will be players with itchy feet and clubs looking to move them on, then we'll maybe get a bit of value. Doesn't really help our Champions League qualifying, but there you go.
**** off sonny. You're wrong and that's that. Celtic beat no-one of signifucance in 67. Oh and Jiffy, glory hunting Celtic fans living in the 60's
My worry would be that the club waits until the last week/day of the transfer window and grab whoever is a free transfer or cheap loan deal for a striker rather than spending money. When was the last time Celtic made a loan deal permanent?
