Didn't you all see Reina fiddling with his boot when Rodgers was giving his motivational speech last season? He was gone from that moment.
I really don't get some of you! I like Pepe but I love LFC. Pepe makes it clear that if the opportunity arose he's want to go to Barca. So Rodgers looks after his own best interests and signs a new keeper. Not our fault Valdes decided to stay for another year. The last thing that Rodgers needs in the dressing room is a pissed-off Pepe (pissed-off with Valdes, pissed-off with Barca and pissed-off that fate hasn't smiled kindly at him). To top that Rodgers would know that he's have to go through the same situation next Summer! So Rodgers did the right thing by shipping him out. We can argue about hoe he did it and the statements that were made but it was the right decision for LFC.
This. Also if Mignolet was our top target to replace Reina then why risk waiting a year until Reina is officially out the door? That would be extremely poor business in my opinion. Glad to see we learned from our old mistakes and brought in new blood before letting the old leave. I also personally think Mignolet at this moment in time, off the back of last season, is a better keeper too. Good business all round.
I agree with the point you made above about Reina costing us points because keepers mistakes inevitably do. Its way too simplistic however. When a whole team drops in performance (which we did) it goes a lot deeper than individuals. Last seasons awful start was brought about by a series of **** ups last summer. As for wages....at the risk of repeating myself (not many walls left to bang my head against here) it's madness saving wages losing top level players then going out and spending millions and millions on dross. It leads to....well, 7th place finishes and a piss poor squad to boot. Edit: the dross comment isn't aimed at Ming.
As a club we aren't applying any of that logic to Suarez though eh. We want to keep a player who unlike Reina WILL spend the next 12 months with a shocking sulky attitude, stirring up **** etc. Rodgers thought he was losing Reina but a) did **** all to persuade him to stay, b) went and brought a replacement knowing that Barca deal wouldn't happen for 12 months, c) flapped about trying to convince people we needed both keepers and d) then flapped even more, told the world we couldn't afford to keep him and booted Reina out the door without any grace or class whatsoever.
Because the Reina of the last 2 seasons was replaceable. In our current situation, Suarez is not. If we were able to buy a striker of similar ability to Suarez for a reasonable sum of money there is absolutely no doubt that we would pursue this player and ship Suarez off as quick as possible. The two situations are completely different and you can't apply the same logic to both.
I didn't read every single post but out of what I read I didn't see the fact that Liverpool mentioned that the move was for financial purposes. I think LFC expected Pepe off to Barca, brought in Mignolet, meanwhile Valdes makes a U turn and Reina tried to make it seem like he wanted to stay, he did plot his statement carefully, although it was wrong from Liverpool to not inform him of the loan move, in terms of that move itself, if Napoli were offering a loan fee + wages then we have to be realistic and realise that saving in itself can be invested in the squad now whilst next year if he gets his almost imminent move to Barca, that money can be re-invested too. Summary: Reina plotted move to Barca, after Valdes made a U turn, made out like the victim LFC were wrong to not inform Pepe of loan LFC had little choice but to loan due to financial constraints, which I personally do not have a problem with as I realise we aren't the richest club in the world right about now.
The situations are different BUT the underlying philosophy isn't - nobody is bigger than the club. In Pepe's case you want out this year, or next year or maybe the year after. In Suarez's case you've signed a contract and ain't going nowhere unless we get the compensation at the level we want, at the time we want. Pepe's gone out on loan but we'll still get a good fee for him if Barca come knocking next season - plus we have a new keeper who is desperate to prove himself at the club and to keep his international place. Suarez won't sulk. He's not Torres, he'll play and play well.
That's a nice little story except .... we bought Mignolet 3 weeks after Valdes confirmed he was staying.
I do agree. We cannot continue to pay them which is why they did some deals and why new contracts are perfrmance based. But also in the case of a suarez... or a REINA... top players get top wages. you simply can't hold a guy long enough to get intothe CL if you don't.... that aside Joe cole... 50% of wages paid out carroll 1mil settlement min pain in the end and wages paid while at west ham aquilani wages paid i do hope reina is not considered in that pile of ****e nor has any of his wages paid by LFC in the next year. I totally agree with balancing the books, driving revenue and so forth. I do not agree with pissing off a great player this much that he publicly rebukes the club that he is now leaving. If we get 50mil form real for suarez i don't know that he'll say much but if we sell him to arsenal i expect we'll be hearing the sob stories... you can't stop that so in the suarez case if the club maximizes return nobody can ask for more.
No mate. I'm yet to meet a Red around the city who thinks this isn't a bad idea. The natives are restless about it.
Why? We've known since he arrived that if Barca came in he'd go. As soon as Valdes signed a new contract we should have either asked Sunderland if we could buy Ming and loan him back to them OR more sensibly wait until Jan (at least) and strengthen where we needed more urgently. We need better defenders and yet now all of a sudden Rodgers is mysteriously happy with our defenders. I can't help but wonder if another ten mill in the pot would have seen us buy where we actually needed to buy.
But can't you see that Reina WILL be at Barcelona next year? Why would we wait for that to happen before acting. I just see fans kicking up a fuss what ever way it went - I'd guess you'd be saying "why are keeping this guy who isn't committed" if we had kept him after his comments regarding Barca.
Indeed. And I can't help wondering if Reinas bed was made...has Suarez's got one of those mint things on the pillow AND a towel folded into the shape of a swan
