We didn't even reach 80 points. We were only promoted because everyone else was crap. Some of the stuff I saw from us last season made me want to cry it was so bad.
I reckon we must have an option on a third, to make it worth our while if he's a hit. But equally and sensibly if he's a miss we can get rid easily.
I won't believe this Chazz, until Tickler comes on tonight, or tomorrow, and tries to make out he has this as his scoop of the day.
With that release clause I doubt he'll ever spend a third year here, if he's up to it he'll be snapped up by a more lucrative club and if he's not we won't renew. I haven't read any articles or quotes from Bruce about him but people are posting that Bruce thinks he'll be a big hit, if so maybe it could be a plan that he has a flying start to the season and goes for the 5 mil in January, then we reinvest that and what else we had to spend on a more preferred target who's currently just out of our price range? I'm sure Steven and the ceo's and directors have covered every outcome between them.
Bruce interview on Talksport yesterday where he said he had a 1 in 3 record, roughly, in France. Pointed out that that was similar to Benteke before he came... So he's set the bar a bit there!
Eric, will you be predicting we'll lose 3-0 every week, like you always do ? If so you should have a more fruitful campaign this season.
You really are becoming tiresome. The only reason ANY club ever gets promoted, avoids relegation or indeed wins the league is because it did better than a pre-determined other number of teams. Build a ****ing bridge.
Precisely. People wetting their knickers about this need to look at the bigger picture. IF this does become a problem for us then brilliant, it can only mean he's been a ****ing success. I'll be delighted if in a year's time we're ****ting ourselves cos someone bids £5m. Jesus there's a lot of panicking fannies on this board today. ****ing man-up.
Maybe Sagbo would only agree to a two year deal, and the release clause ? We have struggled to attract our prefered targets (striking),so his agent would have held all the cards when negotiating.
Hardly, I was questioning the point of our board and directors basing decisions on sound business commercial principles. Signing a player the manager believes is going to be a real success for upto £3m including add ons on a 2 year deal with a £5m release clause is not sound business practice. It is somewhat stupid, he could now have a blistering 12 months like Benteke and get sold for £5m. What is the current market value of Benteke? £15m - £20m? A short 2 year contract is saying exactly the opposite to what has been said in the press, if they think a player's going to be a huge success, then the length of contract would support that statement.
No problem in having a release clause but 5 million is **** all. Say W Ham or Newcastle are in the bottom 3 and we are 4th from bottom with Saggie on 15 goals at Xmas, they will just sign him to **** us up
Didn't Benteke cost £11m? edit - just checked and yes he did, so comparing him to Sagbo is just ridiculous. £11m is hardy the fee you pay for someone unless you know they're very good. And if Sago is worth £5m in 12 months then his value (assuming the £1.6m quoted is true) will have increased by 212%. For Benteke to increase the same amount would see him valued at £34.4m.
When I read this morning the 2 year deal thing that did concern me - but then I thought if he is banging the goals in early season surely an improved contract would be offered (with a higher release fee). There really are some negative nellies on here - we got promoted from 2nd place last season (which is the best in our history), we have a great manager and a great chairman who are making sure the deals are good for the club long term. And I will be betting on us finishing outside the bottom 6 (if I can find a bookie willing to take that bet)
Points are only a measure of relative team strength to other teams in the division. You can't use a points total to prove it was a weak division. It only tells us that it was a close division. You'd expect him to stay in that situation though. All a release clause does is force us to accept a bid, doesn't force him to go. A club our size in the PL will be forced to accept big bids anyway, and £5m would be our record transfer. Anyway where's this release clause come from? It'd only be at our disadvantage to announce it and whilst it's a good clause to have from the player's point of view, I can't see why he'd want to broadcast it the day after signing. It'd suggest a lack of loyalty or that he's already looking at his next move. I reckon it's bullshit.
