No disrespect - but does this indicate 'more money than sense' to others, as it does to me? £1300 would pay for the new kitchen we badly need/my wife is nagging for.
With respect BB, £1300 will not (anything remotely approaching a half decent) kitchen buy... unless you want to buy another one again next year - 18months tops. Just 'cos they do it on Homes under the Hammer it does not mean to say you'll get one that actually lasts. And she got her new kitchen last year anyway (cost a f*****g fortune it did too) We are going without a proper holiday this year and I was made redundant after 12 years a few moths ago. Not all a jolly and we know how very lucky we are.
It would actually Fez - have already priced it. The main costs in buying a kitchen are in design & installation - neither of which I would have to pay. A cousin and a neighbour - both retired, one a builder & the other a kitchen fitter - will do all the hard graft, I just have to buy what's needed. Doesn't include white goods, but our washing machine, fridge, tumble drier and cooker are all only a year old anyway.
Any thoughts on this? Quote for sanding, filling and painting the outside windows (18 of them) and doors...£2,900 for 12 days work & two blokes. The other quote was less but the bloke excluded the doors which he said really needed replacing (they are cracked in places, with old filler peeling off). Out here in the sticks there aren't many painters and decorators around. The only others I tried were booked through to the end of September. Does it sound too much, given I suspect costs down here are higher than average?
On purely a time basis at £120/day for labour then 12 days for 2 men =24man days @£120/day is £2880 leaving £20 for materials. So the price does not look excessive for 24 days labour. But what looks a lot to me is 24 days to do 18 windows and doors. Depends on their size, I suppose. If they are similar to Buckingham Palace then its probably a good price.
Thanks, CM...pretty much what I was thinking. I suppose each window needs cleaning, sanding, primer, undercoat, top coat and two of the doors need beading replaced and quite a lot of filling. It might also depend on how fast they work of course!
Ahhh... the old 'Homes under the Hammer get your pals and family in' routine! Depends what you go for... say - laminate tops or granite, cheap'n'cheerful B&Q units or decent (say) Magnet units; Integrated cookers (say Neff) etc or stand alone cheapies like Beko. Point is, you get what you pay for and of course it depends on the size of the kitchen. At my previous house it was 11'x7'... our new kitchen/breakfast area is at least 50% bigger. £1300 scarcely covers the kitchen tap for my top end clients but you could easily find one for £30 (ours was a relatively modest £150 if I recall) ... check my profile and see what I do, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm talking about on this occasion (though I have my moments! )
That's about right. That is paying for two skilled guys rather than a skilled fella and a labourer (say £90 per day). Get references before appointing.
LOL to me that comes under gardening and you already have The Potting Shed... you won't see me there, I'm allergic to gardening
This is worth watching just for Holloways interview after the match... he actually makes a gun noise! http://youtu.be/nJ-TKiXz_7w
Yes I saw that. He looked a talented footballer as a youngster but doesn't seem to have made much of it. I don't know whether injury or personal issues have held him up.
Don't feel sorry for him, but do for this guy who was only guilty of what we would all like to do... http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/10577282.Fan_is_banned_for__winding_up__Crystal_Palace_boss/?ref=rss Neat finish from Mat Sadler there too - why did he never do that for us?
