Anton Ferdinand has told Harry Redknapp that he wants to stay and fight for his place at Queens Park Rangers in the Championship this season.

Ferdinand lost his starting role in Redknapp’s first team last term and ended up spending the second half of the campaign on loan at Turkish club Bursaspor.

He has been linked with a move away from the west London club, where he has spent the last two years of his career since joining from Sunderland.

Redknapp is believed to be prepared to listen to offers for the 28-year-old, but Ferdinand feels he can make a strong contribution in the Championship next season.

He said: “I’d like to help the club get back into the Premier League. That’s the aim. The chairman [Tony Fernandes] has got his vision and I want to be a part of that.

“As a professional I’m going to keep my head down and work hard and if I’m not starting I’ll continue to work hard. Playing football is the best job in the world, whether you’re in the Premier League, Championship or League One. Anyone who knows me knows that I just want to play football. If I’m not given a chance to play football I’ll look elsewhere to play.

“That’s just the way I am. I like to play football week in, week out. I like to train hard all week for the bonus at the weekend which is to play the game.

“There is only one goal at this football club and that is to get back into the Premier League as quickly as possible.”

QPR have a friendly at Southend tonight and a behind-closed-doors game against Leyton Orient tomorrow, and Ferdinand expects to be involved in the latter.

The club’s players were accused of lacking fitness as they slumped to the bottom of the Premier League last season, but Ferdinand has revealed Redknapp has made sure that won’t be a problem this time around.

He added: “It’s been a very hard pre-season, probably one of the hardest since I was a youth team player. There has been more physical work and for the first four or five days we didn’t even see a ball. It will stand us in good stead for the season to come.”

    Love it !

I'm thinking the real reason Anton wants to stay and play for us that his mum has objected driving all the way to Turkey on a weekly basis.

Anyway, if he can turn over a new leaf, so can I .............. I'll turn the other cheek & lead by example. ( can't believe I'm saying this )
If he is genuine and is prepared to give his best for the club, I'll back him and give him a go.
That includes not bringing the club into disrepute, thus being the better person and shaking everyone's' hand and putting the club first.

It is a new season and if any current team player makes similar comment, he will get my support as well.
We need every player on the same page if we are going to have one almighty crack getting promoted.

I can see the groundsman's helper a possibility, however with the new pitch system he will be slow to get things done and struggling to keep up with the pace of things. Might be better to find a new pitch to be fair.

What he's really saying is "I won't find any other mugs to pay me £40k per week, QPR is not too far for my Mum to drop me off and pick me up everyday, so I am happy to stay and grow my bank account. I've done better than I ever thought I would in life, and I'm only a footballer because of my surname"
