Its definitely the minority who have become aware of 'this subject'. Who knows what the majority will think if and when they realise? It'll probably depend on how the news reaches them....
At the end of the day if it's gunna happen it's gunna happen. I personally don't see what all the fuss is about 'Hull City AFC' 'Hull City Tigers' 'Hull Tigers' it's still the same club, it's still in keeping with a name that is synonomous with our club. If AA had turned round and started calling us 'Kingston Upon Hull City Airlie Rovers' and our new kit was black, white and red then fair enough, but I don't understand why everyone is getting themselves in such a state over this.
You know a reasonable amount about the club but I'm sure many people who see Hull Tigers won't realise it's anything to do with Hull City. Hull Tigers sounds very tacky. It seems to have been dreamed up by a marketing person who has no understanding over marketing or Hull City.
Who knows but Nick Thompson explained what and why on sportstalk and it been in the HDM. What else is to be said on this tired subject ?
No Club's name and basic history (no matter how unsuccessful) should be changed. There was a general mutual reaction towards Cardiff having their colours changed, and changing the name is near enough the same thing. Can you imagine how "Hull Tigers" would look in the League Tables? We compete in the English Premier League, not the bloody MLS. Any name change at this Club would be met with vast protests I can assure you. We are Hull City and should remain that way.
Please enlighten us "Oh intelligent one". What mess is this going to create? Will the world end? Will we have no football club to follow any more? Will we be given a 20 point deduction? Will we have to play in green from now on? Please tell me about this mess you are fearing. The only genuine problem some seem to have is the fact that it sounds "tacky", which first off, is completely subjective and down to your own preference and secondly, not enough of a reason for me to lose sleep over.
Will the world end? No, stupid question. Though the embarrassment of a Yankee style renaming is a terrifying prospect. Will we have no football club to follow any more? We will, and I don't think anybody's suggested that we wouldn't, just the fact that being renamed "Hull Tigers" is both embarrassing and pointless. Can you imagine trying to attract top players to an already non-appealing football Club which had been renamed "Hull Tigers"? Will we be given a 20 point deduction? No, and again, don't think anybody suggested we would. Will we have to play in green from now on? These questions aren't even remotely funny. Go home, you're drunk. Please tell me about this mess you are fearing. Well, Hull is already subject to stereotypical images that have been circulating the UK ever since it was named one of the worst places to live. Attracting players to the area is difficult enough without having a name that would put even more players off joining us. We have a great fanbase which has stuck with the Club through thick and thin without change, without fault and changing our stamp in History is just pure idiocy. "Hull Tigers", bloody hell. You can already see the widespread mocking and piss-taking that would be on all Forum's, Social Media Sites, Sports Channels (through the pundits etc - SkySports Panel would have a ball with this). The main question would be; why fix something that isn't broken?
This is what was reported in HDM: HULL City managing director Nick Thompson has played down any fears that the club is about to be renamed. Fans have grown increasingly worried that the club is about to be rebranded as Hull City Tigers, having seen various examples of the name used in official club marketing. But, speaking on tonight’s edition of SportsTalk on Radio Humberside, Thompson was adamant that there is no ‘grand plan’ to change the name which the club has had for the past 109 years. When asked if there was a plan to change the club’s name, he said: “No. The business name was changed this year to Hull City Tigers. “We never talk about Hull City AFC, we talk about Hull City, we talk about the Tigers, we talk about black and amber. “In terms of the football club, it is Hull City and it is an associated football club. In terms of the business, the business is Hull City Tigers. “Most companies will have the name of the business entity which owns the company on the building, that’s what we have done at the training ground. “If we talk about football-related things, it’s Hull City. If we talk about business-related items, it’s Hull City Tigers." END OF REPORT The club is all about football. Why try to differentiate between football and business? Doesn't it make more sense for the business matters such as sponsorship, etc, to link to the football club which is the high profile operation? Does a rock group say selling tee shirts, etc., would be more successful if we use a different name than the name of the group? The club seem to have got this "branding exercise" arse about face. All other brands seem to link the appeal of the product with the business opportunities. Hull City AFC, or whatever they want to be called, seems to be trying to destroy that link and create confusion by changing the name of the company to be different from the football team. Some people may think: "What does it matter dropping AFC and adding Tigers?" For starters the team who plays in the Premier League is "Hull City" so it would make sense keeping the company name the same or very similar. It's well known in football to have AFC or FC after the club name but dropping it and adding a nickname isn't usual and is downright confusing. Is "Hull City AFC" the same as "Hull City Tigers" or "Hull City Council" or is it a speedway, basketball, squash club, etc. from Hull? I am certain it makes more sense, even from a business point of view, to link the football club to it's commercial activities as closely as possible. Nick Thompson says they're not going to change the name but they already have changed the name. Nick Thompson has not been able to justify the name change.
I think the stupidity of this can be picked up from the fact that not one other club to my knowledge has gone down this road already. The reason this would be a precedent, is because all other clubs understand that it's a ridiculous, pointless concept and a potentially damaging idea, that would ultimately add little if no value to brand HCAFC
Hull City is now finally after 109 years (or 104 if you're being pedantic) a world-wide name. Why change it now, ffs?!?!?!
